Chapter 146: I Won’t Let Anyone Wrong You
(Author’s POV)
Mr. Zimmer had already asked Leo why he’d thrown the first punch. Leo had said nothing. Not a word. Just pressed his lips together and stared at the floor.
So he’d called the emergency contact – the sister.
He looked at Quentin now, who was sprawled in his chair like the office belonged to him. Mr. Zimmer had been teaching for fifteen years. He knew the type. Quentin Rathbone had money behind him and he knew it, and he used it the way some kids used their fists – casually, without thinking much about the damage.
“This is ridiculous,” Quentin said, for the third time. “I didn’t do anything. He just came at me out of nowhere. I’ve got witnesses. Half the class saw it.”
“We’ll review the situation when-”
“When what? When his sister gets here?” Quentin’s mouth curved. “I mean, sure. Fine. Let her come.”
Leo’s head stayed down.
The door opened.
Zachary Rathbone walked in. He was well–dressed, the kind of man who wore expensive things without thinking about them, and he went straight to his son’s side, tilting Quentin’s chin up to examine the bruise.
“Who did this?”
Quentin pointed at Leo without hesitation.
Zachary turned. His gaze moved over Leo slowly – the worn jacket, the cut on his face, the rigid posture of someone braced for impact. Something shifted in his expression. Not sympathy. Something colder.
He turned to Mr. Zimmer. “What kind of school are you running here? My son gets assaulted in a classroom and you’re sitting here waiting?” He straightened. “I want this student expelled. Today.”
“Mr. Rathbone, I understand your concern-”
“I don’t think you do.” Zachary’s voice dropped to the register of someone used to being listened to. “I’m taking Quentin to the emergency room to document these injuries. And I want Leo’s guardian to cover every cent of medical costs, plus damages. If this school doesn’t act, I will.”
Mr. Zimmer kept his expression neutral, but his jaw tightened. He’d seen this before too – the parent who walked in and immediately reached for the nuclear option, not because it was warranted, but because they could. An expulsion on a student’s record for fighting was effectively a closed door. No decent school would touch him after that.
“I’ve already contacted Leo’s emergency contact,” Mr. Zimmer said carefully. “His sister is on her way. I’d like to wait until she arrives before we discuss next steps.”

Quentin’s expression shifted. Something flickered there interest, and something else. “His sister?”
Leo’s head came up.
His eyes were red–rimmed, and for a moment the careful blankness cracked. “Mr. Zimmer.” His voice was
rough. “I told you I didn’t want my family called. Whatever the punishment is, I’ll take it. But I wasn’t wrong.
He was.”
“Leo-”
“I’ll take the suspension. I’ll take whatever. But I’m not going to sit here and say I was wrong when I wasn’t.”
“You threw the first punch,” Mr. Zimmer said, deliberately stern. “That’s what I need you to explain. Why did
you hit him?”
Leo’s mouth closed. He looked back at the floor.
Quentin made a sound – a low, satisfied exhale. “See? He can’t explain it, because there’s nothing to
explain. He just went crazy.” He leaned back in his chair. “I want an apology and I want him gone.”
Mr. Zimmer pressed his fingers to his temple and said nothing.
A knock at the door.
It was light, polite. The door opened a few inches, and Aurora leaned in. “Sorry – is this Mr. Zimmer’s
office? I’m Leo’s sister.”
Quentin’s gaze went straight to her.
Zachary’s did too. He’d been expecting someone frazzled, maybe, or young and uncertain – someone he could steamroll as easily as he’d steamrolled the teacher. What he got was a woman who stood in the doorway with complete composure, dark chestnut hair pulled back, wearing a fitted blazer, and looking at
Mr. Zimmer like she was there to have a professional conversation. His eyes moved over her in a way that
was slow and deliberate and had nothing professional about it.
Aurora registered the look. Her brow shifted – just slightly – and she stepped into the room, putting the desk between herself and Zachary without making it obvious she was doing it. She settled her attention
on Mr. Zimmer.
“Thank you for calling me,” she said. “Can you walk me through what happened?”
“Your brother struck another student,” Mr. Zimmer began. “We’re trying to determine-”
“I already told you what happened,” Zachary cut in. “Your brother attacked my son without provocation. I
have witnesses. I’m pursuing expulsion and full compensation.”
Aurora looked at him. Her voice stayed even. “And you are?”
“Zachary Rathbone. Quentin’s father.”
She held his gaze for a moment, then turned back to Mr. Zimmer. “I hear that Leo threw the first punch. I’m

not here to dispute that. But Leo has never initiated a physical confrontation in his life. He was sick for
most of his childhood – he’s not someone who goes around hitting people.” She paused. “Before we talk
about consequences, I’d like to see the classroom footage. Whatever happened, it happened in a room
with cameras. Let’s look at the whole picture before we decide who owes what to whom.”
Zachary’s expression hardened. “We don’t need footage. The facts are-”
“The facts are that a camera either captured what happened or it didn’t.” Aurora’s voice didn’t rise. “If your
son did nothing wrong, the footage will show that. If Leo did nothing wrong, it will show that too. Either
way, it seems like the most straightforward path forward.”
Mr. Zimmer looked at her. He’d been dreading this meeting since he’d made the call, picturing some
overwhelmed young woman who’d fold the moment Zachary opened his mouth. He hadn’t pictured this.
