Chapter 19: Seemg You Home1

Chapter 19: Seeing You Home1

(Author’s POV)

Phineas’s words landed like a physical blow, slapping the arrogance right off Sienna and Jasper’s faces. The shame in the air was thick enough to choke on.

Olivia Redmond didn’t miss a beat. She let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the awkward silence like a knife.

Wow,” she drawled, her voice carrying easily to the onlookers. Straight to Mama? And here I was being accused of spreading rumors. That has to be the joke of the year.

Whispers erupted around them. The guestsgazes turned predatory, dissecting Jasper with a mix of curiosity and disdain. Jasper stood frozen, his face burning. He wished the polished

marble floor would crack open and swallow him whole.

Serena looked as though she had swallowed a lemon. Her attempt to show off her connection to the head of the Everett family had backfired spectacularly.

Sienna realized she was teetering on the edge of social suicide. She forced a stiff, unnatural smile onto her face, trying to salvage the situation with feigned intimacy.

Uncle Phineas, she said, her voice trembling slightly. You’ve misunderstood. It was just a slip of the tongue from a child

Phineas didn’t let her finish. His steelgrey eyes swept over her with chilling indifference.

Apologies,” he said, his tone flat. I don’t recall having a niece your age. To avoid confusion, you may address me as Mr. Everett.

Sienna flinched as if struck.

Phineas wasn’t done. He delivered the final blow with casual cruelty. Furthermore, you don’t need to explain this misunderstanding to me. As long as this gentleman’s legal wife believes you, that is all that matters.

Sienna’s face drained of all color. It was a public execution. She was used to manipulating men with tears and fragility, but Phineas was a wall of iron.

Jasper clenched his fists, feeling a crushing sense of defeat. He had wanted to impress Phineas with his business acumen, not provide entertainment with his messy private life.

Olivia looked ready to pop another bottle of champagne until Mrs. Redmond pinched her arm, shooting her a warning glare.

Arthur Everett, sensing the family reputation crumbling, stepped in with a forced laugh. Lord Sterling, Phineas,he said loudly. Why don’t we head up to the VIP lounge? We have matters to discuss.

Lord Sterling, eager to avoid a domestic drama at his charity gala, quickly agreed.

As the crowd dispersed, Sienna turned on Jasper, her humiliation morphing into rage.

Where is she?she hissed.

Jasper ran a hand through his hair, his expression dark. I don’t know where that woman is, Sienna. Leave it.

Sienna saw the lingering doubt in Serena’s eyes. She needed to fix her face. She spun on her

heel and stormed toward the restrooms.

Fate, however, had a twisted sense of humor. As Sienna pushed open the heavy oak door to the ladiesroom, she saw Aurora standing at the vanity, calmly applying lipstick.

The sight made Sienna snap. She marched forward, cornering Aurora against the marble

counter.

Why are you here?Sienna shrieked. She stepped closer, her eyes manic. And what is your relationship with him? The man from the boutiquePhineas Everett! Why did he help you?

Jealousy consumed her. She had tried for years to gain entry into the main Everett family circle, yet Aurora seemed to have an in.

Aurora capped her lipstick. She watched Sienna’s reflection in the mirror, her expression bored. Are you so desperate for male attention that you’re hallucinating? What man?

Don’t play dumb!Sienna screamed, dropping her mask of elegance completely. You think you’ve won? Jasper never loved you. You were just a pathetic placeholder for me. Even Rosalind knows it. She prefers me as her Mamaover her own biological mother. Once you’re kicked out of the family, that child will forget you ever existed.”

The words were designed to maim, but Aurora’s heart had long since calcified against them. She turned slowly to face Sienna. Her eyes were dry and hard.

Is that so?Aurora said, her voice terrifyingly calm. Then congratulations. You finally got your wish. You’re the stepmother now.”

Sienna stared, mouth agape, trembling with impotent fury at Aurora’s indifference. Unable to draw blood, she stomped out of the restroom, the door slamming behind her.

In the silence, Aurora reached into her clutch. She pulled out her phone and tapped the

screen, stopping the voice recording. A cold, humorless smile touched her lips.

(Aurora’s POV)

I had lost all appetite for the gala. The encounter in the bathroom left a sour taste in my mouth.

Claim

I pulled out my phone and typed a quick message to Olivia: *Too much drama. I’m heading out. Have fun destroying them.*

I slipped out the side exit. The reality outside was grim. The valet stand was swamped, with a line of guests stretching down the driveway. A harried attendant informed me the wait was at least fortyfive minutes.

Chapter 19: Seeing You Home2

I’ve called a car,I lied to a concerned doorman to avoid questions.

But when I checked my app, the screen mocked me. *No cars available.* We were halfway up a hill in an exclusive residential zone; rideshares were nonexistent.

A gust of wind swept through the canyon, cutting right through the thin fabric of my evening gown. I shivered, wrapping my arms around myself, regretting leaving my coat in Olivia’s car.

Just as I was debating the insanity of walking down the hill in heels, a sleek black Bentley Mulsanne glided out of the shadows. It pulled up right beside me.

The rear window rolled down silently. Phineas Everett sat there, his profile sharp against the dark leather interior. He turned to look at me, his expression unreadable.

Get in,he said. I’ll see you home.

My instinct was to refuse. He was dangerous, and our earlier encounter on the terrace was still too fresh in my mind.
