Chapter 195: Neil Dawson Is Dead
(Aurora’s POV)
My ears went warm. I turned away before he could see it.
(Author’s POV)
Three days later, Jasper arrived at the Everett estate.
He came in person, which was unusual. Butler Alfred showed him into the sitting room, where William
Everett was already settled with his morning coffee. Jasper set a cream envelope on the side table – thick
paper, embossed gold lettering – and took the offered seat across from the family patriarch.
They talked about nothing in particular. Business. The weather. The kind of conversation men like them
had when they were waiting for something.
William kept one eye on the door.
When Phineas walked in, William’s shoulders dropped a fraction. No Aurora. Good. The situation was
already complicated enough – his son had married his grand–nephew’s ex–wife, and William still hadn’t worked out how to explain that at dinner parties.
Jasper stood and extended his hand. “Phineas. Good timing.”
Phineas shook it. His gaze moved to the envelope on the table.
“Wedding invitation.” Jasper picked it up and held it out. “The tenth of next month. I’d be honored if you
could make it.”
Phineas took the envelope and turned it over in his hands. A faint, unreadable smile crossed his face.
“You’re moving fast.”
“When you know, you know.” Jasper’s tone was easy, comfortable. The tone of a man who had no idea
what he was walking into.
“I’ll be there,” Phineas said. He set the invitation down. “I’ll bring my wife.”
Jasper smiled. “The more the merrier. I didn’t know you’d remarried.”
“Recently Phineas’s expression gave nothing away. “You’ll meet her.”
“Looking forward to it.”
After Jasper left, the sitting room went quiet. William set down his coffee cup with a careful click.
Phineas turned toward the window and said, in the same mild tone he might use to discuss a quarterly report, “I’m planning my own wedding for the end of next month. I wanted to give my wife something
worth remembering, so I made sure the dates don’t overlap”
William stared at the back of his son’s head.

“Phineas-”
“I thought you’d want to know in advance. To make arrangements.”
William opened his mouth, closed it, and then said, with the practiced diplomacy of a man who had survived sixty years of family politics, “That’s yes. We’ll need to coordinate the guest list. And the venue
There’s a great deal to ” He cleared his throat. “I’ll speak to your mother.”
The sitting room door opened.
Serena walked in, still in her coat, and stopped when she saw Phineas. Her eyes went sharp.
“Were you here when Jasper came?” she demanded. “Did you say something to him? Because if you -”
“Serena.” Phineas’s voice was flat.
“He’s family, and you’ve never once made things easy for him, and I’m tired of watching you –”
Phineas turned his head toward Arthur, who had followed Serena in and was standing two steps behind
her with an expression of profound exhaustion.
“Someone should teach her to read a room before she opens her mouth,” Phineas said. “Before she does
it somewhere that actually matters.”
Arthur’s jaw tightened. “Serena. Enough.”
“I’m just saying –”
“You’re not saying anything else.” William’s voice dropped into the register he reserved for occasions when
he was genuinely displeased. “Apologize to your uncle.”
Serena’s mouth closed. She looked at Phineas, then at her grandfather, then back at Phineas. The defiance in her face curdled slowly into something that was not quite an apology but was at least a retreat.
“I’m sorry,” she said stiffly. “I spoke out of turn.”
Phineas looked at her for one more second, then turned and walked toward the stairs without another
word.
Eleanor had been sitting in the armchair by the window through all of it, her coffee untouched, watching. She waited until Phineas’s footsteps faded on the upper landing. Then she turned to Arthur.
“Fix it,” she said simply. “Whatever it takes. She needs to understand that there are rooms she can’t walk
into swinging”
Arthur nodded, tight–lipped.
Eleanor looked at the empty doorway for a moment longer, and thought, not for the first time, about
Aurora – quiet, careful, precise Aurora, who read every room before she entered it and never once said the wrong thing at the wrong moment. The contrast was not flattering to Serena

Chapter 195 New Dawion is Dead
Leo came home on Friday evening. I was in the kitchen when I heard Martha’s voice from the hallway that particular tone she used when she was trying to sound casual and wasn’t managing it
I came out to find her holding Leo’s backpack open, and in her hand, a cream envelope with gold lettering.
My wedding invitation.
Leo saw my face and reached for it. Too late.
Martha had already read enough. She looked up at him, and then at the empty hallway where I was
standing, and the color shifted in her face.
“This is your sister’s name,” she said. Not a question.
Leo said nothing. His silence confirmed everything.
Martha’s hand dropped. She set the invitation down on the side table with a careful, deliberate movement, and I watched her work through it – Aurora was getting married. Aurora hadn’t told her. Aurora had not, in
fact told her anything in a very long time.
“Leb.” Her voice was controlled. “Did you know about this?”
“Mom –”
“Did you know?”
