Chapter 201: Too Much to Drink
(Author’s POV)
“The smell alone,” she said under her breath.
Jasper didn’t respond.
“I’m only letting this go because the wedding is in two days,” she said. “Don’t make a habit of this.”
The car moved through the quiet streets and turned into the gated community where they’d set up their
home together. The driver helped Jasper inside while Sienna went ahead, woke the housekeeper, and had
a glass of ice water prepared and set on the nightstand.
She carried it into the bedroom herself.
Jasper was already half–collapsed across the bed, jacket gone, one arm thrown over his eyes. She sat on
the edge of the mattress and tapped his cheek with two fingers.
“Sit up,” she said. “Drink this before you pass out.”
His eyelids dragged open. His gaze was unfocused, somewhere past her.
“Aurora,” he said.
The word was soft. Almost gentle. The kind of tone that only surfaces when someone has drunk past the point of managing themselves.
Sienna’s hand went still.
Jasper didn’t notice. He reached up, found her arm in the dark, and pulled her toward him with the
uncoordinated certainty of someone who was mostly asleep.
“You came,” he murmured. “You always come.” A faint smile crossed his face. “You make the best coffee in the morning. Will you make it again tomorrow?”
Sienna shoved him back.
His head hit the headboard with a dull knock. He made a low sound, turned onto his side, and went under
completely, breathing slow and even.
Sienna sat where she was.
On the nightstand, the glass of ice water sat untouched, condensation collecting on the outside, running
slowly down toward the coaster,
The marriage certificate was already filed. The ceremony was forty–eight hours away.
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she looked at the glass.

She drew a breath in through her nose, slow and deliberate, and told herself what she’d been telling herself for longer than she cared to admit – that she didn’t have better options, and neither did he, and that was simply the shape of things.
(Aurora’s POV)
Jasper’s wedding was, at best, a footnote. I hadn’t thought about it once since the bachelor party two
nights ago.
Sienna, apparently, had other ideas.
She was standing at the entrance of my building when I came out at noon, dressed like she was attending
a lunch with the board of directors – structured coat, heels, the full performance. She spotted me before I
could pretend not to see her.
I considered my options for approximately two seconds, then gestured toward the coffee shop across the
street.
“Three minutes,” I said, once we were inside and I’d ordered. I hadn’t even sat down properly. “That’s what
you’re getting.”
She reached into her bag and produced an envelope. Gold–embossed, thick card stock. She slid it across
the table like she was presenting evidence in court.
“Tomorrow,” she said. “Jasper and I. I wanted you to hear it from me.”
I picked up the invitation, glanced at it, and set it back down.
“Did you come all the way here to collect a gift check from the ex–wife?” I asked. “That’s a new one.”
She smiled. It was the kind of smile that had probably worked very well on a lot of people for a very long
time.
“I came to be gracious,” she said. “You deserve to know that the chapter is closed. Properly.”
“How thoughtful.”
“You were a placeholder, Aurora.” She said it gently, like she was delivering difficult news to someone who needed handling. “You always were. And now I’m taking my place. In that house, in that family. With Rosalind.” She tilted her head. “Children forget. She’ll forget you were ever her mother. I just thought you
should have time to prepare yourself for that.”
She paused, then added, “I genuinely hope you find happiness. That’s all I want for you. You have my
blessing to move on.”
I let her finish.
Then I brought my hands together slowly and gave her three quiet, deliberate claps.
“That is genuinely impressive,” I said. “You drive the knife in and somehow come out looking like a saint.
That takes real talent. I mean it.”

I picked up my coffee cup.
She was still smiling.
I threw the coffee in her face.
It wasn’t scalding – just warm enough to make a point. It hit her square across the cheek and jaw and
soaked the collar of that very expensive coat. She let out a shriek that turned every head in the room.
I stood up, smoothed my jacket, and looked down at her.

“I have zero interest in your wedding,” I said. “But since you asked for a blessing – you and Jasper are both
exactly as rotten as each other. Genuinely, a perfect match. Congratulations.”
I left without looking back.
Behind me, I heard her voice rising, the scrape of her chair, the murmur of other customers. I pushed
through the door and walked back toward my building without slowing down.
(Author’s POV)
At the same hour, in the study of the Everett estate, William sat behind his desk with the expression of a
man who had been carrying a headache for several days and expected it to get worse.
Phineas stood across from him, turning one of the chess pieces from the board on the corner of the desk
over in his fingers.
