Chapter 203: Ruby
(Aurora’s POV)
She frowned and told herself she was imagining things.
There was no version of events in which her uncle had chosen *that* woman.
She turned and went back inside, already thinking about tomorrow’s wedding and whether Phineas would
finally bring his mysterious wife out of hiding.
(Author’s POV)
Serena had slept three hours.
The silhouette she’d caught on the terrace last night – dark hair, familiar posture, sliding into the passenger seat of a car she didn’t recognize – had circled her mind until nearly four in the morning. She’d been on the verge of talking herself into a conclusion when Sienna called.
“You’re coming early, right?” Sienna’s voice carried that particular brightness she reserved for days that
were entirely about her. “I need someone there who actually knows what they’re doing.”
“I’ll be there in an hour,” Serena said.
She put on her bridesmaid dress, pushed the silhouette to the back of her mind, and went.
When she arrived at the Rathbone estate, Sienna was already seated at the vanity, the makeup artist
working on her foundation, a glass of champagne on the table beside her that she hadn’t touched yet. She
looked radiant. She also looked like a woman who had rehearsed this moment many times and was finally
getting to perform it.
“You look beautiful,” Serena said, and meant it.
“I feel beautiful.” Sienna smiled at her reflection. “Today is perfect. Everything is going to be perfect.”
Serena set down her bag and pulled up a chair. The makeup artist worked in silence.
“I was thinking about the door game,” Serena said. “The one where Jasper has to answer questions before
he can see you.”
Sienna’s eyes lit up. “Tell me.”
“A quiz. Things only someone who really knows you would get right. Every wrong answer, he takes a penalty. All correct, he gets through.”
“He’ll get them all right.” Sienna said it without hesitation. “He knows me better than anyone.”
The makeup artist smiled. “That’s so romantic. You can really tell when someone’s the real thing.”
Sienna paused for just a moment. Then she smiled and said, “I wouldn’t be marrying him otherwise.”
She said it like a declaration. But her eyes had gone somewhere else for just a second somewhere

Serena couldn’t follow.

Serena kept her mouth shut. Today was Sienna’s happiest day. Whatever she’d half–seen last night on the
terrace could wait.
Across the city, Jasper’s alarm had gone off twice without waking him.
It was Rosalind who finally got him up, climbing onto the bed and shaking his shoulder with both hands,
her voice high and insistent.
“Daddy. Daddy, wake up. You’re going to be late.”
He surfaced slowly, head heavy, mouth dry. The bachelor party had gone later than it should have.
Victoria appeared in the doorway, already dressed, and looked at her watch with the expression of a
woman calculating exactly how much time had already been wasted.
“Get up,” she said. “You have forty minutes.”
Jasper sat up and pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes.
Victoria watched him. She’d been watching him a lot lately – watching and not saying anything, which was unlike her. She was a superstitious woman. She remembered the early days of his first marriage, the small
disasters that had stacked up before Aurora even crossed the threshold. She’d blamed Aurora for those.
She’d blamed Aurora for a great many things.
Now, standing in the doorway watching her son drag himself out of bed on his wedding morning, she found herself thinking about Sienna. About the years before Adam died. About the way Sienna had always
been there, always present, always positioned just close enough.
She didn’t say any of it. She just watched Jasper and felt, somewhere beneath the anxiety about the schedule, a cold and private hope that this marriage would be exactly as short as the last one.
“Rosalind,” she said, “go get your coat.”
Jasper’s car left forty minutes late. Twelve minutes into the drive, they hit a standstill. An accident three intersections ahead had blocked two lanes completely. The driver checked his phone, said something about a forty–minute delay minimum, and Jasper said nothing and stared out the window.
By the time the wedding party arrived at the venue, the Rathbone family had been waiting for over an hour.
The smiles on their faces had gone from warm to fixed.
Sienna was still seated in the bridal room, her posture perfect, her expression composed. But her jaw was
tight.
Jasper came in with apologies and the faint residue of last night still in his eyes, and Serena stepped in smoothly, clapping her hands once.
“Alright. Before anyone goes anywhere the groom has a test to pass.”
The bridesmaids arranged themselves. The guests who’d gathered near the entrance leaned in with

interest. Serena held up her phone with the questions she’d typed out the night before.
“Question one,” she said. “What is Sienna’s favorite champagne?”
Jasper answered. He was wrong.
Light laughter. A penalty – he had to serenade the nearest bridesmaid with thirty seconds of off–key singing. The room loosened a little.
“Question two. What color dress was Sienna wearing the first time you saw each other?”
He thought about it. He said blue.
Sienna, behind the door, said nothing. It had been green.
