Chapter 213: She Will Always Be My Sister
(Author’s POV)
Aurora kept walking.
In one of the guest rooms upstairs, Sienna was pacing.
“She just walks around like she owns the place,” she said. “She’s a divorced woman. She abandoned her own daughter. And somehow she’s got Phineas wrapped around her finger and Eleanor treating her like a daughter–in–law of the year.”
Serena was sitting in the armchair by the window, examining her nails. “Phineas chose her. He doesn’t do
things without reasons.”
“What reason? What does she have that-”
“Sienna.” Serena looked up. Her voice was mild. “You’re also on your second marriage.”
The room went quiet.
The words weren’t cruel, exactly. They were just precise. Serena said them the way a person states a fact –
calmly, without particular emphasis and that was what made them sting.
Sienna stopped pacing. Her expression went very still.
A knock at the door broke the silence.
‘Mrs. Everett?” A staff member’s voice came through the door. “Dessert is ready in the drawing room
whenever you’d like to come down.”
Serena stood and smoothed her jacket. “We should go.”
Sienna said nothing. She turned to the window for a moment, then followed.
Jasper’s family left before four. Phineas stood at the entrance with Aurora as the cars pulled away, and when the last one disappeared through the gate, he reached down and laced his fingers through hers.
He didn’t let go.
They walked back inside, and William, passing through the hall, gave his son a look that said *you are the head of a major corporation and you are behaving like a twenty–year–old.*
Phineas ignored him.
Aurora tried to pull her hand back. His grip tightened.
“Phineas-”
He bent his head toward her ear. His voice dropped.
“The study window overlooks the garden path,” he said. “I heard everything.”

“So I have a question.” There was something in his voice – not quite teasing, but close. “You told Jasper I was better in *other ways*.” He paused. “Rory. How exactly do you know that?”
The heat hit her face before she could stop it. Her ears went hot. She turned to look at him and found him watching her with that calm, unhurried expression that somehow made it worse.
“I need to find Eleanor,” she said. “She wanted to show me something in the library.”
She pulled her hand free and walked away at a pace that was not quite dignified.
Behind her, she heard him laugh – low, quiet, deeply satisfied with himself.
She kept walking.
That night, the estate settled into silence. Jasper fell asleep quickly. Sienna lay still beside him until his breathing deepened and steadied, then slipped out of bed and onto the balcony, pulling the door shut
behind her.
She dialed from memory.
The phone rang four times before Martha picked up, her voice thick with sleep. “Hello?”
‘Why didn’t you finish it?” Sienna’s voice was barely above a whisper, but the fury underneath it was unmistakable. “Years ago. Why didn’t you just finish it? She’s married into the Everett family now. She spent all day making me look like nothing in front of everyone.”
Martha was quiet for a moment, processing. “She married – Phineas Everett?”
‘Yes.” The word came out like something bitten off. “And now she’s untouchable, and it’s your fault. You
had every chance.”
‘Sienna-”
“You still have a chance to fix this.” Sienna’s voice went cold and flat. “If you want to keep the apartment. The monthly payments. The name you’ve been using. All of that can disappear very quickly.” She let that
settle. “Think about what you want to do.”
She ended the call and stood in the dark, the night air cool against her face.
(Author’s POV)
Martha hadn’t slept properly in three days.
She kept picking up her phone and staring at Aurora’s number, knowing full well the call would never go through. Blocked. Had been for months. She set the phone face–down on the kitchen table and watched the clock instead, counting the hours until Leo came home for the weekend.
When she finally heard his key in the door Friday evening, she was on her feet before he’d even stepped
inside.

“Leo.” She grabbed his arm. “Your sister – did you know? Did you know the whole time that the man she
married was her boss?”
Leo stopped. He set his bag down slowly and looked at her. “Where did you hear that?”
“That doesn’t matter. Just tell me – yes or no.”
Last time, when Martha had found the wedding invitation Aurora had sent, he’d reacted fast enough that
she shouldn’t have been able to read the name on the envelope. But apparently she’d seen more than he
thought.
Leo’s expression settled into something careful and still. “What I’ll tell you,” he said, “is that her husband takes very good care of her. Whatever you know, whatever you think you know – don’t go near her.”
“Leo-”
“I mean it.” His voice was quiet but firm. “I’ve got exams coming up. I don’t have the bandwidth to manage whatever happens if you show up on her doorstep. And nothing good would come of it. Nothing.”
Martha opened her mouth, then closed it.
“Aurora is my sister,” Leo said. “She always will be. Please don’t make trouble for her.”
He picked up his bag and walked to his room.
