Chapter 26: The Subpoena–2
Phineas stopped, his hand on the doorknob. He didn’t turn around.
“She had a miscarriage,” Patrick said quietly. “Very recently. Her body is still recovering from
the trauma.”
The muscles in Phineas’s jaw tightened. His hand gripped the brass knob until his knuckles turned white. A cold, terrifying aura radiated from him, dropping the temperature in the
hallway.
“I see,” Phineas said. His voice was devoid of emotion, yet heavy with a dark, suppressed
violence.
He opened the door and walked out.
Patrick watched him go, shaking his head. “Asset, my ass. You’re in deep, my friend.”

Jasper arrived at the hospital an hour later.
Rosalind was finally asleep, clutching a teddy bear. Jasper stepped out into the hallway, his shoulders sagging.
Sienna sat on the bench, looking small and fragile. She looked up as he approached.
“She’s out,” Jasper murmured, sitting beside her.
He felt like he had been run over by a truck. His daughter was sick. His wife was suing him. And his jaw throbbed where that maniac had punched him at the ER.
“Jasper,” Sienna whispered. She reached out and gently removed his sunglasses.
She gasped softly. “Your face…”
“Ran into a door,” he muttered, repeating the lie.
Sienna didn’t question him. She opened her purse and pulled out a small tube of ointment. She dabbed a cool bit of gel onto her finger and touched his bruised cheek.
“Does it hurt?” she asked, her eyes swimming with tears.
“It’s fine,” he said, though he leaned into her touch.
“We’re in this together, Jasper,” Sienna said, her voice trembling with emotion. “I know things

are hard right now. But you have me. Think of me as family.”
The tension in Jasper’s chest loosened. After the cold silence from Aurora and the legal
threats, Sienna’s warmth was a balm to his soul.
He pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her neck.
“I won’t hide anything from you anymore,” he promised hoarsely.

Sienna wrapped her arms around him, resting her chin on his shoulder. They clung to each other in the quiet hospital corridor, looking for all the world like a devoted husband and wife.
Neither of them noticed the figure standing at the end of the hall, phone raised, the camera lens capturing every second of their embrace.

Victoria Everett sat at her vanity, removing her pearl earrings. Her phone chimed with a FaceTime request.
It was her sister.
“Victoria,” her sister’s voice was sharp. “Is Jasper home tonight?”
