The evening air in the garden was crisp. Mrs. Walsh linked her arm through Aurora’s.

“How is the divorce proceeding?” she asked gently.

Aurora sighed. “It’s moving forward.”

“And the child?” Mrs. Walsh asked, her voice dropping. “Custody battles can be brutal. Usually, a mother has to trade a lot of financial assets to keep the child.”

Aurora stopped walking. She looked at the moonlit roses.

“I’m not fighting for custody,” Aurora admitted quietly.

Mrs. Walsh looked surprised.

“Rosalind… she isn’t just close to her father,” Aurora said, her voice bitter. “She has been completely brainwashed by Jasper and the Everett family. She worships their power. She despises me.”

Aurora closed her eyes for a moment. “She sees me as an enemy. If I force her to live with me, it will only cause endless conflict. She’s spoiled, entitled, and she has made her choice. I have to respect that, even if it hurts.”

Mrs. Walsh squeezed her arm. “You are making a brave choice. Letting go is harder than holding on.”

“I just want peace,” Aurora said.

“You’re young,” Mrs. Walsh said warmly. “Once you are free of that toxic environment, you’ll find yourself again. You can date. You can live.”

“I don’t think I’m made for marriage,” Aurora shook her head. “Not after this.”

Mrs. Walsh looked at Aurora’s delicate profile. In her mind, an image of Phineas appeared. He was cold, yes, but he needed someone exactly like this.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the sound of running water filled the silence.

Professor Walsh leaned against the counter, watching his nephew scrub a porcelain plate.

“You’re surprisingly domestic tonight,” the Professor teased. “Trying to impress me so I ask your aunt to set you up on a blind date?”

Phineas didn’t look up. He rinsed the plate with precision.

“Maybe,” Phineas said. “If you know someone suitable.”

“Oh?” Professor Walsh raised an eyebrow. “What’s your type?”

“Petite,” Phineas said immediately. “Pale skin. Dark chestnut hair. Someone intelligent. Resilient. Maybe a medical researcher.”

Professor Walsh frowned. The description was oddly specific.

“Wait a minute,” the Professor said slowly. “That sounds familiar.”

“Does it?”

Professor Walsh narrowed his eyes. “What if this person is divorced? What if she has… baggage?”

“I don’t mind,” Phineas said simply.

Mrs. Walsh and I walked back into the living room. The scent of fresh coffee hung in the air.

“Professor, I should get going,” I said. “I need to visit my brother, Leo, at the hospital before visiting hours end.”

Professor Walsh’s expression softened. “How is the search for a bone marrow match coming along?”

“No luck yet,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “But we’re hopeful.”

“Don’t worry,” he said firmly. “I’ll keep pressuring the donor registry network. We will find a

match.”

“Thank you, Professor.” I picked up my handbag.

Mrs. Walsh glanced out the window. “It’s pitch black out there. How are you getting to the hospital?”

“I called an Uber,” I said.
