Chapter 45: The Confession

Chapter 45: The Confession1

(Aurora’s POV)

Claim

A strange calm settled over me. The panic that had threatened to suffocate me earlier evaporated, replaced by cold, analytical clarity. I frowned slightly, my eyes tracking Director Harrison’s gaze as I scanned the faces in the conference room.

My mind raced. Who framed me?

It wasn’t Charlie. He was a weasel who would sell out his own mother for a promotion, but he was a coward. He didn’t have the guts for arson.

It wasn’t Sylvia. She had clocked out early, her alibi solid.

The others? I barely spoke to them. Why would they risk a felony just to hurt someone they hardly knew?

My gaze sharpened, hunting for a crack in the facade. It swept past the managers and landed in the far corner.

Simon Zayne.

The usually quiet technician was hunched over in his chair, making himself as small as possible. He stared intently at the carpet, as if hoping a hole would open up and swallow him whole. He was vibrating with tension.

I stared at him. I poured every ounce of my anger into that look.

As if he felt the heat of my glare, Simon’s head snapped up. Our eyes locked across the

room.

Panic. Pure, unadulterated panic flashed in his eyes before he looked away.

(Aurora’s POV)

If anyone owned this room, it was Phineas Everett.

The CEO sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking bored. His long fingers tapped against the wood twice. *Thud. Thud.*

The sound echoed like a gavel strike.

Since no one wants to speak,Phineas said, his voice dropping to a temperature that could freeze water, Harrison, call the police. This is attempted arson. Let the detectives handle the interrogation.

The word policeshattered the silence like glass.

Simon shot up from his chair. The legs scraped violently against the floor, a harsh screech that made everyone jump.

No! Don’t call the cops!Simon’s voice cracked, high and desperate. It was me! I did it!

Gasps rippled through the room. Heads whipped around.

Simon?someone whispered in disbelief.

He was the guy with the thick glasses. The one who kept to himself. The one who worked late without complaint. No one expected the quiet tech guy to be capable of something so malicious.

Phineas didn’t look surprised. He just looked cold.

Meeting adjourned,Phineas announced, not even looking at the trembling man. Harrison, Monica, and Mr. Zayne stay. The rest of you, get out.

I stood up, smoothing my skirt. As I walked past Simon, I narrowed my eyes at him. I still didn’t understand why. What had I ever done to him?

He refused to meet my gaze.

Out in the hallway, the tension broke. Sylvia practically tackled me in a hug.

Thank God, Aurora! I knew you didn’t do it.”

Charlie, however, was leaning against the wall, looking annoyed. Great. Just great. There goes the safety bonus for the whole quarter. Thanks a lot, Simon.

(Phineas’s POV)

The room was empty now, save for the stench of fear radiating from the man in the center.

Harrison paced in front of Simon, his face red with indignation. Why, Simon? Give me one good reason.

Simon stared at the table, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge.

I justI don’t like her,Simon mumbled, his eyes darting around the room, avoiding mine. She walks in here and gets lead on a core project. It took me five years to get to where I am. It’s not fair. I just wanted to smudge her record. I didn’t mean to burn the lab down.

Harrison scoffed. Jealousy? That’s your defense?
