Chapter 46: The Mastermind Behind the Scenes
(Author’s POV)
Phineas strode through the massive double doors of the Everett estate.

In the drawing room, Matriarch Eleanor Everett sat on a velvet sofa, a porcelain cup of Earl Grey tea poised in her hand. She looked up, arching a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
“Well, if it isn’t the prodigal son,” Eleanor said, her tone dripping with affectionate sarcasm. “I was beginning to think you treated this house like a hotel. Or perhaps you’re just avoiding my calls about the debutante ball guest list?”
Phineas ignored the jab about his bachelor status. He unbuttoned his suit jacket, his expression unreadable.
“Mother,” he acknowledged with a curt nod.
His grey eyes swept the room and landed on Serena. The young heiress sat in a wingback chair, looking slightly flushed. She had just finished seeing off Victoria.
“Serena,” Phineas said, his voice dropping a few degrees. “Since you are here, we need to
talk.”
Serena stiffened. She forced a bright, brittle smile. “Uncle Phineas? I was just keeping Grandma company.”
“Upstairs. Study. Now,” Phineas commanded.
Serena’s fingers twisted together in her lap. She looked toward her grandmother for help. “Can’t we talk here? I haven’t finished my tea.”
Eleanor frowned, sensing the shift in atmosphere. Phineas rarely raised his voice, but his
silence was often louder.
The front door opened again. Arthur Everett walked in, tossing his golf bag to a servant. He loosened his tie, his face flushed from the sun.
“What a game,” Arthur laughed, wiping his forehead. “The back nine was brutal today.”
He paused, noticing the tension. “What’s going on?”
Phineas didn’t look at his brother. He kept his gaze fixed on his niece.
“Since your father is here, and you refuse to move,” Phineas said coldly, “we will do this right
here.”

Serena shrank back into the cushions. A cold dread settled in her stomach.
“Yesterday,” Phineas began, “someone threw an incendiary device into a restricted lab at Aether Life Sciences. It was a deliberate attempt to destroy research data.”
Serena gripped the armrests. She shrugged, feigning nonchalance. “I heard about that. Terrible business. Some incompetent new hire, right? He should be fired immediately for gross negligence.”
The room went silent.
Phineas turned his head slowly. His stare was predatory.
“How do you know it was a ‘new hire‘, Serena?”
Serena blinked. “What?”

“The internal investigation meeting was sealed. Level one clearance only,” Phineas said, his
voice dangerously soft. “We haven’t released a statement. So how do you know the blame was shifted to a new employee?”
“I… I’m the Deputy HR Director,” Serena stammered. “I hear things. It’s my job.”
“You hear too much,” Phineas said. “And you act on it too freely.”
Arthur stepped forward, his jovial mood vanishing. “Phineas, what are you implying? Did Serena mess up a filing?”
Phineas pulled out a tablet. He tapped the screen and handed it to Arthur.
“Serena didn’t just mess up,” Phineas said. “She orchestrated a felony.”
Arthur stared at the screen. His eyes widened.
“Aurora spotted the server intrusion first,” Phineas continued, his voice cutting through the air like a scalpel. “She noticed someone accessing her terminal remotely. Instead of blocking it, she let it happen. She tracked the command lines back to the source and backed up every single byte of data.”
Phineas looked at Serena with cold amusement. “You thought she was a helpless victim? She watched you dig your own grave, Serena. She logged every interaction, every command
you sent to Simon Zayne.”
“That’s a lie!” Serena cried out, jumping to her feet. “Simon confessed! He did it! He hates her!”
“Simon is a pawn,” Phineas retorted.

He swiped the tablet screen, bringing up a chat log. He then tossed a printed stack of papers onto the coffee table. They fanned out, revealing timestamps and messages sent from Serena’s encrypted account.
“Read it,” Phineas ordered. “Detailed instructions on how to frame a colleague. Promises of cash payments.”
Arthur snatched up the papers. His face turned a deep, furious purple.
“You bribed an employee to commit arson?” Arthur roared, throwing the papers down. “Are you insane?”
“She deserves it!” Serena screamed, tears streaming down her face. “She’s just a gold–digger! A low–class nobody trying to climb the ladder! She doesn’t respect the hierarchy! She thinks she can just walk in and take over because she’s smart!”
“She is smart,” Phineas said icily. “She knows her value. Unlike you, she earned her position through merit, not a last name.”
“Enough!” Arthur bellowed. He pointed a shaking finger at his daughter. “You are finished. I’m freezing your trust fund. No allowance. You are suspended from the company indefinitely. Go to your room and stay there.”
Serena gasped, looking at her father in betrayal.
“And count yourself lucky,” Phineas added, smoothing his cuffs. “Aurora wanted to call the police. I stopped her. I told her the family would handle it. Do not make me regret that mercy.”
Serena let out a sob and fled up the grand staircase.
