Victoria turned to Sienna, her eyes cold.

“And you. You encouraged this, didn’t you?”

Sienna’s throat tightened.

“I didn’t know-”

“Of course you didn’t.” Victoria’s voice dripped with contempt. “Because you’re not her mother. You never will be.”

The words hung in the air like a verdict. Sienna felt the weight of every nurse’s sidelong glance, every whispered comment. *She’s not the mother. The real mother would have known.*

Victoria swept past them into Rosalind’s room, leaving Sienna standing alone in the hallway, humiliation burning through her veins.

Aurora hummed as she unlocked her apartment door. Phineas followed her inside, carrying the shopping bags.

“Make yourself comfortable,” she said, heading to the kitchen. “I’m going to cook something.”

Phineas raised an eyebrow.

“You cook?”

“Don’t sound so surprised.” Aurora tied an apron around her waist. “I make a mean arrabbiata.”

Twenty minutes later, she set two plates of pasta on the table. The sauce was a violent shade of red, flecked with chopped jalapeños and red pepper flakes.

Phineas stared at his plate.

“This is… colorful.”

“It’s called ‘Devil’s Arrabbiata,” Aurora said cheerfully, twirling pasta onto her fork. “My specialty. I haven’t made it in years.”

“I knew you’d like it! Jasper always said my cooking was too aggressive. But I think food should have personality, you know?”

“Absolutely.”

Phineas took another bite. Then another. Sweat beaded on his forehead. His ulcer screamed in protest. But Aurora looked so happy, so relaxed, that he kept eating.

“This is really good,” he lied smoothly.

Aurora laughed.

“You’re sweating. Is it too spicy?”

“Just right.”

By the time he finished the plate, his stomach felt like it was lined with broken glass. But he smiled, accepted a glass of water, and complimented her cooking one more time before excusing himself.

The moment Phineas slid into the backseat of his car, his composure cracked. He loosened his tie and leaned back, pressing a hand to his abdomen.

“Sir?” the driver asked, concerned.

“Find a pharmacy,” Phineas said tightly. “Now.”

Ten minutes later, he swallowed two antacid tablets and chased them with a bottle of water. The burning in his stomach eased slightly.

The driver glanced in the rearview mirror.
