So I told her. Victoria showing up at the hospital. Martha’s voice – *you should have been more careful* – and the way Leo had looked at me when he said *does it still hurt.* I told her that Victoria, Martha, and Leo all knew about the miscarriage now, and that Jasper would have the full picture before the end of the day.

Olivia’s expression went through several things in quick succession. She settled on controlled fury.

“What did that man say when he found out?”

I turned my glass slowly on the bar top. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t-”

“And I don’t care.” I felt the corner of my mouth lift slightly. “He’ll find out everything he needs to know at the hearing.”

Olivia exhaled through her nose. “Good. Let Gavin take him apart in front of a judge.” She picked up her glass. “Your mother though. God, Aurora. She was sitting right there?”

“She was.”

“And she said it was your fault.”

“She said I should have been more careful.”

“Same thing.” Olivia set her glass down harder than she meant to. “I’ve never understood it. I’ve known you for – what, eight years? And in eight years I have never once seen that woman put you first. Not once.”

I didn’t say anything. There wasn’t much to say.

“You know she’s not going to show up for the hearing.”

“I know.”

“I will.” She pointed at me. “I will be there. Front row. And if anyone tries to make you feel small in that courtroom, I will personally-”

“Livvy.”

“I’m serious.”

“I know you are.” I looked at her. “Thank you.”

She waved it off, but I could see she meant it.

We sat quietly for a moment. Then she set her elbow on the bar and leaned in with the expression she got when she was about to change the subject to something she’d been saving.

“So. The birthday party.”

I looked at her. “Whose?”

“Eleanor Everett’s.” She raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t hear?”

“Hear what?”

Olivia smiled and reached for her glass. “Oh, this is a good one. So Jasper showed up – with Sienna, Rosalind, and Victoria, the whole parade. He brought Eleanor a brooch. Emerald, very elegant–looking.” She paused for effect. “Fake.”

I blinked.

“A replica. And Phineas-” She pressed her lips together, clearly enjoying this. “Phineas had sent ahead a full Graff set. Custom emeralds. The real thing. And he pointed it out. In front of everyone.”

I could picture it. The room, the guests, Jasper’s face.

“Then Rosalind-” Olivia hesitated for just a second, and I felt the small, familiar ache at the name. “She knocked the whole set off the display. Broke it.”

I said nothing.

“And then – and this is the part – Jasper’s butler somehow got past security and served the divorce papers right there in the ballroom. In front of all the guests.” Olivia shook her head. “Phineas told everyone that Sienna had interfered in Jasper’s marriage. William drove them all out.”

This explained the doubts that had been weighing on my mind. Phineas had helped me because he despised the Jasper family.

I was a useful piece on a board he was already playing.

“Hey.” Olivia touched my arm. “You’re thinking too hard.”

“I’m fine.”
