Chapter 62: A Gift–2

I didn’t know whether to laugh or be moved. I settled on something in between.

“Thank you,” I said, and put it in my bag.

(Author’s POV)

After Aurora left, Phineas went to his bedroom.

He took the cufflinks out of the box and stood in front of the mirror. He put them on. He looked at them for a long time – the deep navy against the white of his cuffs, the small weight of them at his wrists.

Then he picked up his phone and took a photo. He posted it to i********: without overthinking it. The caption was three words: *Tonight’s gift.*

He set the phone face–down on the dresser.

He picked the phone back up and called Benny.

“I need you to look into something,” he said when Benny answered. “Aurora’s situation at home. Specifically her brother – Leo Caldwell. He has leukemia. I want to know where things

stand with his bone marrow match.”

Benny was efficient. He called back in under twenty minutes.

“The donor Jasper brought in didn’t match,” Benny said. “But Sienna Rathbone tested. positive. She’s a viable match.”

Phineas said nothing for a moment.

Sienna. Of course:

He could see it immediately – the whole shape of it. Sienna with a compatible bone marrow result and Aurora’s brother’s life in the balance. It was the kind of leverage that didn’t require any cleverness to use. You just held it and waited for the other person to break.

“What about the other lead?” he said. “The one I asked you to track through the international

registries.”

“There’s a match flagged in the Korean bone marrow bank,” Benny said. “Still being verified. The data looks clean, but we haven’t confirmed the donor’s availability.”

“Tonight you’ll fly to Seoul.”

A pause. “Sir, the visa-”

“Handle it.” Phineas’s voice was flat. “I don’t care how. Get it done.”

He ended the call.

The following weekend, Aurora went alone.

The restaurant was the kind of place that didn’t appear on any public listings – private dining rooms, no signage, the sort of establishment that existed entirely on referrals. Sienna had chosen it.

Aurora sat across from her in the enclosed room. Sienna had arranged herself in her chair with the ease of someone who had never once doubted that the world would wait for her.

“I’ll pay you,” Aurora said. No preamble. “Name a reasonable figure.”

Sienna tilted her head. “I don’t need money.”

“Then what do you need?”

“What I need,” Sienna said, smoothing the napkin across her lap, “is for you to stop spreading things online that damage my reputation. And to acknowledge that you owe me an apology for the way you’ve behaved.”

“That’s not what this meeting is about,” Aurora said. “What do you actually want?”

Sienna finally looked at her directly. The pleasantness dropped.

“I’ll donate,” she said. “And I’ll throw in thirty million dollars on top of it. You walk away from this whole thing with money in your pocket.” She paused. “All you have to do is withdraw the divorce petition. And waive your claim to marital assets – including your half of the portfolio. Which, if you’ve done the math, is somewhere north of a billion.”

The room was very quiet.

“If you refuse,” Sienna continued, her voice perfectly mild, “you’ll leave that marriage with nothing. My legal team will make sure of it. And your brother-” She left the sentence unfinished.
