We made our way through the pack house, and the chaos I’d woken to had only intensified. Pack members were everywhere, cleaning, organizing, preparing. Everyone moved with frantic purpose, trying to make everything perfect before the elders arrived.

I saw guards rushing to their positions, weapons polished to impossible shine. Saw omegas arranging flowers and ensuring every surface was spotless. Saw children being herded inside by worried parents who didn’t want their offspring underfoot during such an important visit.

“All pregnant women have been advised to stay indoors,” Kael explained as we walked. “It’s traditional. Their husbands can offer gifts on their behalf during the welcoming ceremony, but the women themselves shouldn’t be present. Something about protecting new life from the intensity of the elders’ presence.”

“That’s ominous,” I muttered.

“It’s precautionary,” Kael corrected, though he didn’t sound entirely convinced. “The elders’ power is… significant. Their presence can be overwhelming for those who are more vulnerable.”

We reached the main entrance where a crowd had already gathered. I scanned the faces, looking for familiar ones. Nina was there, directing final preparations with sharp efficiency despite the worry evident in her expression. Jordan stood ready with other senior guards, his posture military-perfect but his face tight with tension.

Margo was in the crowd as well, I noticed. The healer’s assistant looked nervous but excited, bouncing slightly on her toes like she couldn’t quite contain her energy.

But Ivory wasn’t there. I looked for her golden hair, her distinctive presence, but she was nowhere to be seen. Which seemed strange given that she’d apparently saved one of these elders’ lives during their last visit. Wouldn’t she want to be present to greet them again?

Unless she was staying away deliberately. Unless there were complications I didn’t understand.

The bell began to ring. Not the normal pack bell that called meetings or warned of threats. This was different-deeper, more resonant, carrying a weight that seemed to vibrate through my very bones.

It rang twelve times. Twelve heavy, solemn tones that silenced all conversation and made

everyone freeze in place.

Then the sky darkened.

Not gradually, not like normal clouds moving to block the sun. Just suddenly darker, as if someone had drawn a curtain across the heavens. The temperature dropped noticeably, and I felt

my wolf respond with instinctive wariness.

“They’re here,” Kael said quietly. “Remember-bow when I do. Don’t speak unless directly addressed. Show respect but not fear.”

Don’t show fear. Right. That would be easier if I wasn’t absolutely terrified.

The crowd parted as five figures appeared on the pathway leading to the pack house gates. They moved with inhuman grace, seeming to glide rather than walk, their presence commanding attention in ways that went beyond physical appearance.

As one, the entire pack bowed. I followed Kael’s lead, bending at the waist in a gesture of respect and submission that felt primal. Every instinct I had was screaming that these were beings of power, of authority that superseded normal pack hierarchy.

I kept my eyes down as they approached, but I could feel them. The weight of their

presence, the intensity of their power, the sense that they could see through any deception or pretense.

The footsteps stopped. Someone spoke-a voice that was simultaneously young and ancient, feminine and somehow beyond gender.

“You may rise.”

We straightened. And I got my first clear look at the Ghost Council elders.

They were… unexpected. Not ancient and wizened as I’d half-imagined, but appearing roughly in their thirties or forties, each distinctive in appearance but united by an otherworldly quality that set them apart from normal wolves.

Bridget stood at the center-a woman with silver-white hair and eyes that seemed to shift colors depending on the light. She radiated authority, the clear leader of this group.

Beside her was Lunaris, whose dark skin seemed to shimmer faintly, as if moonlight moved beneath the surface. Her expression was serene but penetrating, like she could see into your soul with a glance.

Mooris was male, broad-shouldered and solid, with hair like burnished copper and a face that suggested he’d seen centuries of pack politics and remained unimpressed by all of it.

Kalicus stood slightly apart, lean and angular, his features sharp and his eyes such a pale blue they were almost white. He was watching the crowd with obvious assessment, cataloging every detail.

And Aryada. The one Ivory had saved. She was smaller than the others, delicate-looking, with golden-brown hair and eyes that held genuine warmth alongside the power that radiated from all of them.

Bridget’s gaze found Kael immediately, and her severe expression softened into something like genuine pleasure. “Alpha Kael. It has been too long since we visited Shadowmere. You’ve grown into your position admirably.”

“Elder Bridget,” Kael responded with perfect formality. “The pack is honored by your presence. All five of the Ghost Council gracing us with a visit—we are deeply grateful and humbled.”

“We heard interesting reports,” Bridget said, her tone making it clear these “reports” were the reason for their visit. “Disturbances in the Southern territories. Attacks. Political complications. We thought it prudent to assess the situation personally.”

Her eyes swept across the crowd, lingering on various pack members before settling on me. And suddenly I was the focus of her attention, of all their attention, and it felt like standing naked under a spotlight.
