“Ivory.” Kael said.

“Book club,” Ivory said immediately. “I’ve been wanting to propose a book club. I have several texts that are genuinely compelling. Not just the botanical chemistry ones. Though those are also compelling. There’s a fascinating volume on the history of-”

“We’re not doing a book club,” Nina said.

“The texts are genuinely interesting,” Ivory said.

“Ivory,” Jordan said.

“Some of them have very dramatic sections,” Ivory said. “Battles. Political intrigue. Interpersonal dynamics, raging pornography aspects that I am still hoping…..never mind. It’s basically fiction except it actually happened.”

“Is any of it your specific reading preferences,” Nina said, with the tone of someone who knew exactly what Ivory’s specific reading preferences included.

“The botanical chemistry texts are very engaging,” Ivory said, with the specific dignity of someone who’d been asked this question. before and had a prepared position. “The chemical processes are practically-”

“Not doing it,” everyone said.

“It’s not just the botanical ones,” Ivory said. “I have a very varied library.”

“We know what you have,” Jordan said.

“The botanical ones are well-reviewed,” Ivory said.

“By who,” Nina said.

“Me,” Ivory said.

We went out of the council room into the corridor, all six of us, leaving the elder council of Shadowmere in a room with a hole in the mahogany table and the specific task of deciding what they were going to do with a pack whose Alpha had just walked out.

From behind the door, I heard Sona’s voice beginning, and the specific quality of what she was saying had the tone of someone who’d been building to something for a long time and had finally been given sufficient provocation.

Ivory’s mouth curved.

“Sona is going to be excellent,” she said, to no one in particular.

“How long do we give it,” Jordan said.

“Morrison folds in twenty minutes,” Nina said. “Bram and Yusuf by thirty. Castellan will take the longest because she has the most dignity invested in the original position but she also has the best analytical mind on the council and the evidence is not ambiguous.”

“Forty minutes,” Kael said.

“Forty,” Nina agreed.

We walked down the corridor and out into the morning,

The pack grounds were bright and alive with the specific energy of the aftermath’s second day- the settling of something that had been at high tension and was now returning to baseline. People were moving, talking, the ordinary rhythms of a working Community present underneath the celebration’s residue.

Several people saw us come out.

Andrew, from somewhere near the eastern path, raised a hand.

Priya, crossing the grounds with two of the eastern flank wolves, looked over and then looked again at the group of us and then at me with the specific expression of someone receiving information about what was happening and categorizing it.

‘The elders, Silver said. *They’re talking.*

‘I know,” I said, internally.

‘Not in a bad way,* Silver said. “The way people talk about things that are settling into a shape they hadn’t expected.*

thought about the last eight months. About every day of finding the footing that wasn’t there and building it anyway. About vory’s training sessions and the backbone and the anchor and the thirty wolves still connected through a link I hadn’t known was possible. About Terrence, who’d positioned himself between a blast and two younger wolves. About Andrew saying “done” hrough the link when I’d told them to prove Damon wrong.

About Morrison’s face when he’d said the previous Luna.

About Kael’s hand going through mahogany.

About Nina dropping her folders.

Ne reached the east courtyard.

The bench was there. The one I’d been sitting on last night when I was trying to reach Ivory through the bloodline connection. Ivory sat down on it without being asked, which meant the standing had caught up with her and she was making a concession that she’d be irritated about later.

Kael sat beside her without comment. Not crowding – just present, the specific adjacency that had been there since before I’d arrived.

Jordan found a position near the courtyard wall with the quality of someone who’d been carrying something heavy and had put it down for the first time in a while.

Nina looked at the courtyard and then at the morning and then at the space between all of us.

“Forty minutes,” she said again. “And then Morrison comes out here.”

“And then we go back in,” Kael said.

“And then we go back in,” Nina agreed.

I was standing at the edge of the courtyard with my hands visible in the morning light, the runes clear and present, Silver warm and awake and paying attention to everything.

Kael looked at my hands.

I watched him look at my hands.

“The runes are new,” he said.

‘Silver says they’ve always been there,” I said. “They became visible this morning.”

‘Silver,” he said.

‘My wolf,” I said. “The bond reopened the channel last night when I accessed the deepest register. She’s been trying to talk to me for eight months.”

He was looking at my hands with the expression that had several things in it.

‘Is she-” he started.

‘She’s here,” I said. “She says hello. And also that she has opinions about the integration situation and she’s been saving them for when she could actually say them.”

Something moved in his expression.

‘There,” Silver said, in my head. “He felt that. The wolf felt you mention the integration.*
