Jaxen POV
"Get to the point," I growled, my voice coming out rough with barely contained fury.
Callista swallowed hard, her trembling fingers smoothing nervously over her dress as she carefully watched my reaction. "I’ve heard stories about witches and dark magic," she finally said, her voice hesitant. "And honestly, that seems like the only explanation for how she managed to escape her execution and somehow end up here. So what if she..."
She trailed off, biting her lip.
"What if she used some kind of spell on him?" she whispered. "A spell that made the Alpha King completely obsessed with her?"
I opened my mouth to dismiss the sheer absurdity of what she’d just said, but nothing came out.
A spell?
It sounded fucking ridiculous.
Lorelei had never shown the slightest interest in dark magic. She’d always been weak, helpless, and pathetic, the cursed twin who couldn’t even stand up for herself. She didn’t have the power to cast a simple curse, let alone manipulate someone as powerful as the Alpha King.
But then again...
I’d spent agonizing months searching for her, turning over every possible stone and chasing every lead I could find, yet I hadn’t uncovered a single trace of her. Meanwhile, the Alpha King had been notoriously celibate for years, practically untouchable, and now, all of a sudden, he was publicly parading Lorelei around like she was the most precious thing in his world, acting like a fucking feral beast ready to tear apart anyone who so much as looked at her the wrong way.
None of it made sense.
The more I thought about it, the less it did.
Seeing me hesitate, clearly lost in the dark spiral of my thoughts, Callista stepped closer, her voice dropping into a fearful whisper.
"And now that she has the Alpha King’s protection..." She hesitated, glancing between me and her mother. "What if she wants revenge on us?"
Revenge?
The thought had never even crossed my mind.
Why would Lorelei want revenge on us? And worse, why would she use the Alpha King to get it?
She’d been mistreated by her parents for years because of that damn curse, but even then, she’d never talked about punishing them. Not once. Back when she was still with me, whenever I promised that I would make her my Luna, all she had ever talked about was finally having a peaceful life. A life where she didn’t have to be afraid of everyone around her.
"We didn’t do anything wrong," I said, my voice hardening as I tried to convince myself as much as I was trying to convince them. "Why would she come after us?"
All we’d done was serve justice.
