Freda’s pov

I don’t know how long I had been walking but it was a pretty long distance since Duncan dropped me off at the border, more like threw

me at the border.

No sign of life, I was tired and hungry, the sole of my feet were bleeding seriously and the pains I felt still didn’t help matters, cursing out loud I decided to stop and rest for a while, my head was hurting badly, I closed my eyes for what seemed like minutes when I suddenly heard a roaring sound, all my body went into defensive mode, it wasn’t like I could do anything against an animal but I was ready, I heard the sound again and I looked around, trying to figure

out where it was coming from.

“I think the engine’s dead” I heard someone say and happiness filled my heart, they could save me from the beast, I thought to myself as I

ran towards the voice.

A man and a woman stood by what seemed like a road and I saw the man lean over what seemed like the beast because it was making that

same roaring sound.

“G–get away from it” I yelled and they both turned to look seriously.

“Are you alright my dear?” The lady asked and I nodded my head.

“I–it’s going to hurt you,” I said and she chuckled, hitting the man.

“This is my husband, John, I don’t think he’s going to hurt me,” she

said and I shook my head.

“Not him, that,” I said now pointing to the car, the man and woman

stared at each other before turning to look at me.

“Honey this is a cab, it’s metal, I don’t think it hurts anybody, well not purposely but are you sure you are okay, you seem to be hurt pretty bad,” she said and I shook my head, I knew how to talk, but I suddenly felt shy, how was I supposed to explain to them what has happened to

“Come here honey, you want water?” She asked and my eyes swelled

with tears as I nodded.

“Sweetheart, grab the bottle from the trunk,” she told her husband and he did just that. I watched her collect the bottle from him and bring it to me. She treated me like I was some wounded animal she

was trying to get close to.

“Thank you,” I said, drinking from her bottle, “I am sorry about earlier, I know what a cab is, I have seen one before, while I was

younger,” I said and the lady smiled.

“Okay honey this is fixed up and ready to go” I heard her husband say

and I jumped up.

“P–please sir can I get a ride, I need to get to this address and I don’t know my way around,” I said showing the now bloodied paper to the

man who took it from me carefully.

“Oh, this is along Maria’s way, we can drop you there, right honey?” He said taking permission from his wife who smiled and nodded.

“I am grateful,” I said getting into the backseat of the metal cab, I watched the both of them interact with each other and I grew a

permanent smile.

The road was busier than I had ever seen, with different structures of cabs, there were big cabs, long cabs, and even one–man cabs, they were all fascinating.

It felt different and yet so Normal, the area felt completely familiar, and the edge I had been on disappeared, I couldn’t believe I had called this cab a beast, it must have been so long since I saw one, now that I was around many of them the feeling came back to me, feeling so comfortable I asked about the long cabs which were called trains and a lot of other things, they were so kind and even offered me

chocolate bars and other types of candy I had never seen.

“So are you visiting after a long time?” They asked me and I nodded.

“Yes, my father has requested I find my mother, hopefully, she will recognize me,” I said, sounding sad. It was something I had tried not to think about, the possibility of my mother not recognizing who I

was.

“Oh darling I am sure she would, you know mother’s always know their children, call it uhh, honey remind me of that word“.

“I don’t remember,” he said and she hit him on the hand.

“You don’t remember anything,” she said with a smile on her face, it was contagious cause I smiled too, they were a beautiful couple and I wanted to ask them so badly if they had children of their own but I remained quiet, it was not nice to prey and besides they would have told me if they wanted me to know.

“We are here, that first house by the corner is the house written on this address,” John said handing me my paper back, I took it and thanked him and his wife.

“I hope it goes well, reunions are the best” the lady giggled, it wasn’t after they left that I realized I didn’t get the woman’s name, sighing I
