Chapter 86
Christie’s POV
A lot had been happening since the arrival of Her Majesty’s famiły
members. Who knew werewolves would be difficult to handle? Being
a half–breed can be quite challenging, and the queen–to–be has made
me realize that from her perspective.
It has been one hassle after another. Three days had passed since
their arrival, and no one seemed to be getting along with each other. I
guessed the union of both families might never fully work out.
“Don’t be a lazy sack of potatoes and go get Her Majesty’s food ready.
Don’t see what she sees in you that grants you favor, but that’s with
her. Here in the kitchen, you earn such favor.”
An older maid in the kitchen said to me as she walked past, carrying a
tray with teapots.
You don’t reply. You don’t speak when you aren’t spoken to, and you
ought to do your job as you were assigned. I said under my breath,
reciting the little mantra I’d made for myself. It had kept me out of
trouble. Even Lady Agatha had steered clear of me since I’d started
doing some of my jobs properly.

“You talking to me, hybrid?”
The maid dropped the tray and walked toward me.
“No, ma’am.” I muttered, bracing myself for the usual slap that
followed. Lady Agatha had surely made her angry, and she was here to
pour that anger on me. It wasn’t the first time, and I’d learned to take
“But I heard you say something.” She bent down to look at my face.
“I’m sorry.”
し
I got up immediately, hurrying toward the main kitchen to pack up
Freda’s food. I could tell the maid didn’t like how I’d reacted, but
luckily she didn’t follow me into the kitchen.
Once her food was arranged neatly on the trolley, I rolled it out of the
kitchen. The distance from Her Highness’s chambers to the kitchen
wasn’t far, but with the variety of food prepared, I had to use a trolley,
His Highness had demanded we feed her with the regular six courses
we served at the dining table.
As I walked past the music room, I saw Verestina with one of the queen’s guests. I was certain it was Lily, her stepsister, talking. It was the third time today I’d seen them together.

I didn’t mean to poke my nose or eavesdrop, but I did. The queen
would surely like to know what they talked about, I told myself as I
made my way to the chambers.
I arranged my garments and apron well before knocking on the door.
“Come.”
I heard her soft voice and pushed the large door open before rolling
the trolley inside and closing the door.
“Hello, Christie.” She said softly, and I smiled.
She was the only person to ever treat me nicely–well, she and Lady Agatha’s son. She had no reason to like me, but she did. I knew she related well to being a half–breed probably that’s why we clicked.
Regardless, I could do and was ready to do anything for her.
“Your breakfast is… what’s wrong? You don’t look as happy as you
sound.”
I frowned.
“It’s nothing, Christie.” She suddenly beamed with a smile. “I’m
starving. This food looks delicious.”

She dragged the trolley over to herself, already tasting some of the
food.
“Well, I might have more interesting things to tell you.” I sat beside
her as she always wanted me to. “I might have overheard a
conversation between Verestina and Lily.”
Her eyes shot up. Her mood had been down since the visit, and she
mostly stayed in her room. I did all I could to cheer her up, and I was
especially glad I did a great job. I’d only seen her out with the family
for dinner, and she was back inside with King Damien.
“What are they talking about?”
Her curiosity sparked.
し
“King Damien, They’ve rather become sudden friends talking about
your mate, my queen. Verestina mentioned how being in the house
could give her access to the king, and Lily is in support of it.”
Freda continued eating like she was unbothered, but I knew
somewhere she was worried about it. “Do you think they can be
successful?”
She asked after a moment of long silence.

“My queen…”
“Damien is in love with me. Verestina or whatever she’s called is no match. She can only try.”
I smiled, loving the confidence she had in the king. “It’s beautiful to watch how much you trust King Damien. However, she’s known him longer. Maybe there’s a weak spot she could easily target, and that’s what she’s preparing for.”
