Chapter 94

Christie’s POV

Since I told Freda what I saw, I’d been feeling terrible. What I saw

could break up her family. I didn’t know why I hadn’t thought about it

before I spilled.

Sighing, I moved the trolley out of the dining area. I noticed Kieran and Amelia were staring at each other flirtatiously. I didn’t know how

it wasn’t obvious for everyone to see. I got to the kitchen still wallowing in my thoughts and didn’t realize I’d bumped into someone

until I felt strong arms holding me up.

“Are you okay?”

The blood in my body froze. That voice belonged to Lady Agatha’s son, Elijah. He was here? My eyes shot up immediately, and I stepped away quickly from his embrace, feeling embarrassed. I stared at my

feet as I apologized.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t see you there.”

He chuckled. “I’m beginning to think you have a knack for bumping into me, but it’s alright. I hope you didn’t get hurt. That trolley must

have pressed back on you.”

I couldn’t help but smile. Asking if I was okay–this was the second

time I’d bumped into him, and he always asked about me first.

“I’m alright. I should be asking if you’re fine.” I was still staring at my

feet.

Ever since we’d met last time, I’d been dreaming nonstop about him-

and they weren’t innocent dreams. A wave of embarrassment passed

through me, and I moved away from him even further.

“Did I do something wrong?” He asked, coming near me.

“No.” I shook my head.

I felt like if I looked at him, he could tell everything I’d been thinking

about him and the reason why he hadn’t shown up these days. Was it

necessary for me to ask him?

“You wouldn’t look at me, and now you’re putting space between us.

That hurts me.”

At the mention of hurt, I raised my head immediately to look at him and caught a smile on his face.

“Sweet. You’re so sweet.”

I flushed red. “Thank you.”

“Don’t be so polite now. I remembered saying I’d have you cook for

me again.” He stretched his hand for me to take.

I turned, looking around to make sure nobody was around. I took his

hand, and he directed me toward the main kitchen. If he wasn’t the

lady’s son, I would have wondered how he knew his way around the

kitchen so well.

He took a seat, pulled another close to him, and gave it a soft pat. I

frowned.

“Sit.” He stared at me intensely.

“You want me to sit?”

“Did I stutter, Christie? Come sit with me.” His voice held an edge

that left no room for argument, and I found myself placing myself on

the chair.

“But I thought I was to cook for you. I mean, there are ingredients left from making breakfast this morning. I could do something for you if you don’t want to have the same thing as them.” I jumbled my words,

and he chuckled.

I paused. His voice was sweet, but the sound of his chuckle was

extremely attractive, and it left butterflies in my stomach.

“What is it? Your face is all red.”

I hid my face immediately with my palm–such a childish move, but

there was nothing else I could do at that moment.

I felt his hand on my hair. It was there for a while before I realized

what he was doing. I’d tied my hair up in a bun because I couldn’t let

it be all over the place while I served at the table. Elijah had loosened

the pins I’d used to hold my hair in place, and my hair fell to my

shoulders.

“Your hair is beautiful let down like this.”

I smiled. He couldn’t see because I was still covering my face.

“Your mother will have my head if she finds me with my hair down

like this in the kitchen.”

He chuckled. His hand tugged on mine covering my face, and I dropped it. He was staring at me in a way I couldn’t describe, and it

didn’t make me uncomfortable. Instead, it made me feel things I
