The man in the black robe fixed his sharp gaze on the chubby Morton and bellowed with rage.
"I know what you're up to. You're just trying to sell those passes for a quick profit, aren't you? And then you've got the nerve to throw accusations at us? You ain't squeaky clean yourself either!
Morton's tiny eyes darted beneath his plump cheeks with a flicker of irritation.
"That's bullsh*t! I've been nothing but honorable! I will not stand for this slander. You're all shameless hypocrites!"
Then, without missing a beat, he spun around and faced Matthew, raising his voice loud and clear.
"Look at these jokers. You just had a stomach issue and had to rush off without your pass, and these jerks treat you like dirt. Just you wait—we're going straight to the guards with this."
After making this righteous proclamation, Morton's eyes softened a little as he leaned closer to Matthew and dropped his voice.
"Hey, you need a District 13 pass? I'm feeling good about us right now.
"I'll give you a deal—15% off. 100,000 Dornia Emeralds, and I'll handle it for you."
Matthew's expression shifted slowly, twisting into something strange at Morton's lowball offer.
It made sense now why everyone—from Corey, who talked about the info traders, to Matteo and the old man at the docks—insisted Matthew find this black market guy named Morton first.
Matthew had been wondering why this Morton guy was so crucial. Now he understood—it was Morton's shameless attitude mixed with his knack for getting passes.
Matthew let out a small, amused chuckle as he looked at the plump Morton. "I'm the one the old man down at the docks sent over," he said casually. "He told me to refuse the deal if it costs more than 50,000 Dornia Emeralds."
Matthew's smile was half-teasing as his eyes locked on Morton.
He wanted to rattle this guy a little. After all, 15,000 Dornia Emeralds was no small sum.
Matthew didn't mind losing some cash, but he refused to get played. He'd already given the old man at the docks 1.2 million Dornia Emeralds because that man was worth it.
They kept to the edges, always ready to dive into the bushes if trouble popped up, and nobody in District 13 ever rocked white.
White just stood out too much in the black market.
Most folks there cloaked themselves in black robes to stay low and keep safe, but Matthew?
He was like a lone white speck standing out in the backdrop of black.
That's why those black-robed guards didn't hesitate to raise their guns and demand his pass the moment they saw him.
Still, since the old man at the docks vouched for him...
Morton's expression softened, but a flicker of pain flashed behind his eyes. "You look like the little brother I lost years ago.
"Since fate brought us together, I'll bite the bullet and cut the price in half—from fifteen grand to 7.5 thousand. 7.5 thousand, and that's as low as I can go. Gotta keep up appearances, pay off favors, send out gifts. Anything less and I'd lose so much money, I'd go broke!"
