Gideon's tactical suggestion made Bud's face twitch.
Then, without warning, Bud shoved the barrel of his gun right against Gideon's forehead.
"You're trying to send me out there as bait, huh?"
"Then what? You sell me out and run to Nathaniel for a deal, is that it?!"
Gideon's thoughtful expression instantly turned to panic.
"Bud! You've misunderstood me—completely!"
"I swear on my life, I've got no intention of betrayal!"
Bud stared into Gideon's eyes, searching for any sign of deceit. When he saw none, he finally lowered the weapon.
"My bad. I got a little worked up."
"But if you do decide to defect to Nathaniel... I won't stop you."
Watching Bud make such a solemn declaration, Gideon could barely keep from rolling his eyes.
You foreigners think I'm that dumb?
Come on. I was raised on military texts. I've practically memorized 'The Art of War' backwards.
You think I can't tell when someone's trying a cheap feint to flush me out? If I leave... you'd shoot me the moment I turned my back.
Despite the curses running wild in his mind, Gideon had no choice but to play along.
"Bud, are you looking down on me?"
"I may be nothing special, but I've got nine years of schooling behind me."
"If I've pledged loyalty to you as my commander, then even in death, you're still my commander!"
His words were resolute, unwavering.
Bud's eyes shimmered.
What a guy.
What a d*mn good man. I'm lucky to have someone like him.
"Gideon, get up, please. You stuck with me today, and once I take over District 13, you'll have your domain."
"Bud!"
"Gideon!"
The two men threw their arms around each other, tears welling in their eyes.
He wasn't wasting a second on emotions or speeches. He was hunting.
From his perch, Nathaniel glanced at the window where Bud and Gideon remained cornered.
Then he moved.
In one breath, he'd packed up his sniper rifle and slung it behind him.
Beneath the mask, a cold smirk curled at his lips.
Let's take our time with this, Bud.
Bud understood Nathaniel better than anyone. But the same could be said for Nathaniel.
He knew Bud lacked resolve. That's why Nathaniel had kept him on as a deputy—not because of his strength, but because he was easy to predict.
Now, there were just two of them left.
If they didn't want to die like trapped rats…
Nathaniel looked down from the rooftop, then vanished into motion, silent as a shadow.
"Bud," Gideon whispered, "isn't there still that underground tunnel to the main building?"
"The place is dark, and the path's straight. Nathaniel wouldn't risk setting an ambush there."
