The red glow in Bloody Rose's eyes seemed to sink into a softer haze, as though embers had fallen into drifting petals, carrying a beauty that was dangerously inviting.

"Just call me Matteo. Matteo Larden."

"Mr. Larden, what exactly is your role?"

Bloody Rose asked again, wanting him to strip away all evasion.

"I'm only a businessman. I usually invest in factories or run small ventures at the docks.

"Business has been slow lately, so I've been twiddling my thumbs at home. So, I wanted to see Ryan, hoping he could connect me with some clients."

Matthew met her sharp gaze without the slightest break in composure.

His tone carried the weight of something entirely believable, leaving no room for doubt.

"A businessman, huh? With the power to wipe out Medusa Gang?"

She found his manner too clever, every word wrapped in something that might be untrue.

"It was nothing but chance. I had someone far stronger lending me a hand."

Matthew thought that he could hardly tell her his family's pendant had given him powers few in the world could rival.

Ariya fussed with the straw hat on her head, trying to tug it off.

"Hold on a bit longer, Ariya. Once we find somewhere to stay, you can take it off."

Matthew's voice was patient and warm.

"She's your daughter?" Bloody Rose picked up her questioning again.

"Our conversation made that clear enough."

His sudden reply held a faint edge.

She gave him a long look and said, "If she's your daughter, why keep her in that hat? You afraid someone will take her?

"Don't worry. While I'm around, no one will touch either of you."

Matthew turned to Ariya and said, "That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Ariya is too adorable. Someone might try to take her away."

Bloody Rose rolled her eyes so hard she nearly tipped her head back.

A shameless daughter-worshipper, she thought.

Bloody Rose thought, So it's hopeless. Three children means he must be deeply devoted to his wife.

"Let's move. I'll take you somewhere to stay."

They kept walking while they spoke.

Bloody Rose knew Ryan was still away on a mission, and until he returned, she had to see to Matthew's safety; his identity could not be exposed.

In time, they reached a villa hidden in a secluded spot.

The guards there greeted Bloody Rose with deep respect.

"This is our boss' home. You can stay here for now, and you'll be safe.

"If you need anything, tell the guards. Try not to wander off.

"I'll have meals sent to your room at fixed times each day."

Bloody Rose arranged everything for him with care.

"Thank you," Matthew said politely.

The words seemed to dampen her mood.

She thought there was no need for him to be so formal with her.
