"So, what's this?
"You've already met Mr. Ryan, and now you think you can take his car and make a run for it?"
The voice came from the same patrol soldier who had stopped Matthew at the gate only a few days ago.
"Yes, I saw Ryan," Matthew said as he stepped out of the car, his tone calm and unhurried.
"He's taking me to dinner."
"Then why didn't I see him? Looks to me like you stole the car and were planning to slip away."
The soldier began to reach for his radio, ready to call in his colleagues to surround Matthew, when a shout ripped through the air like a crack of thunder.
"Clear out of my way, all of you!"
Ryan strode toward them with long, sharp steps. In one hand, he held a bottle of wine he had just retrieved, and with the other, he pointed directly at the patrolmen. His face was hard with anger.
The soldiers froze. They quickly backed up a few paces and saluted.
"You've got a lot of nerve to hassle someone who is my guest," Ryan said, his voice low but brimming with threat.
"Forgive us, sir," one of them stammered. "We didn't know he was your friend. We thought—"
"You thought?" Ryan cut in, stepping forward and driving his boot into the man's side.
Matteo was not someone they had any right to question—Ryan himself would hardly dare to.
"You have already asked for my details when I passed through here the other day."
Matthew leaned toward the soldier now sitting in the dirt.
"What? You stopped Mr. Larden before?" Ryan's voice rose in fury.
"You have one minute to get to the latrine and scrub every toilet. You're not worthy of this post."
The soldier didn't argue. He bolted for the restroom at once.
…
Ryan drove Matthew and Ariya to a tavern and chose a table by the window where the view spilled across the street.
Matthew had been meaning to ask about Ronny, but with Ariya there, he kept quiet.
He used a soft, hypnotic touch to lull her into sleep, then held her gently in his arms.
"What kind of man do you think Ronny Donald is?" Matthew asked as he lightly patted her back.

"She claims Ronny Donald betrayed his closest friend, set a trap during a fire, and caused her father's death.
"She says she saw it with her own eyes, and she swears she's not mistaken.
"I came to find the truth. If Ronny Donald really hides behind a mask of false kindness, I will not spare him."
Matthew gave him only part of the story, watching his reaction.
Ryan spoke without hesitation.
"Mr. Donald would never do something like that. He is kind to everyone.
"If it weren't for him, I'd still be a worthless deckhand, beaten and ordered around like an animal.

His voice shook with conviction, unwilling to let anyone stain the name of the man he saw as a light in the dark.
When Matthew said nothing, Ryan leaned forward.
"Ask anyone in District 12.
"Many of them have been helped by Mr. Donald. A man like that does not betray his friends or take lives."
