That night, a sharp pounding echoed against the door of the alternative medicine clinic.
Matthew pulled it open and found a figure cloaked in black standing rigidly on the step. The man's movements were stiff, and his uneven breaths revealed that he was hurt.
As Matthew's eyes slid over his arm, a mark burned into his sight again.
The serpent brand. This stranger was a member of the Medusa Gang.
At last, after endless waiting, one had arrived.
The man peered at Matthew with suspicion. "Where's the old owner of this clinic?"
Matthew's voice was steady, his expression calm.
"He's gone. I was his partner. Before he died, he left this place in my hands."
The man's gaze sharpened with menace. "Did he tell you anything else? I'm talking about the chamber beneath the clinic."
The man was warning Matthew not to do anything stupid.
Matthew answered without hesitation. "He told me everything before he passed. I'll carry on his work. You can trust me to handle it."
He knew instantly that this man wanted to reach the hidden chamber. Without waiting for another word, Matthew moved to lead him there.
When Matthew unlocked the heavy door with practiced ease, the man's shoulders finally loosened.
That chamber was a secret known only to trusted insiders of the Medusa Gang.
If Matthew had the code, it meant the previous owner had passed it to him as a mark of loyalty. In the man's mind, Matthew already belonged to them.
They stepped into the underground chamber. The walls glimmered faintly under the dim light, and the sharp scent of chemicals filled the air. This was no ordinary room. It was a laboratory for human experiments.
Matthew lifted a black glass vial from the shelf and held it out with careful courtesy.
The man accepted it with a nod, satisfied with Matthew's quick sense.
He drained the potion that swelled his strength, then tucked two more vials into the pocket of his cloak.

He listed the gang's rules and codes, then slipped into the night.

"Boss, did someone come in? Was it a patient?" she asked brightly. "I can take care of them."
Matthew shook his head. "No, just a man looking for directions. He's already gone."

"Boss, aren't you going to bed?"
Matthew forced his voice into calm, even as his chest tightened. "You go on. I'll rest soon."
He refused to drag this innocent girl into the storm circling him. Her safety rested on knowing nothing at all.
When Bailey's footsteps faded upstairs, Matthew slipped out the door. But the night was empty, and Sogan's presence had already vanished.
