Bewilderment flickered across Julius‘ dark eyes, a brief spark of vulnerability quickly masked by caution.
Across the room, a ragged cough cut through the tension.
Julius whirled. From beneath a toppled stack of canvases, Joaquin emerged, shoving the splintered frames aside with shaky hands before staggering upright. White plaster dust coated his once–black suit, turning the fabric an ashen gray. Blood traced bright lines across his forehead and knuckles where shattered brick and glass had found soft flesh.
Julius kept the pistol steady, but his gaze never left the wounded man; hurt or not, Joaquin remained as dangerous as a cornered wolf. Until the final moment, no one could predict which of them would claim victory, and Julius refused to let hope dull his edge.
“Laura’s gun is in my hand now. Your puppet cannot shoot me anymore.”
“Is that so?” Joaquin rasped, a dry chuckle escaping cracked lips. “I can still order her to die. The moment I keep the trance in place, one word from me and she pulls the trigger on herself.”
A muscle jumped in Julius‘ jaw. From the corner of his eye, he saw Laura pushing herself to her knees, dazed but largely unhurt thanks to the way he had thrown her down earlier.
Should I knock her out cold? That might sever the link and spare her from obeying him.
“If you knock her unconscious, you’ll be cutting the tether by force,” Joaquin warned, his eyes glittering with cruel amusement. “When the hypnosis is finally lifted, she might become a fool.”
Satisfaction curled across Joaquin’s face as he watched the conflict writhe behind his son’s eyes.
Would Julius surprise him tonight, or would he once again fail to live up to the Whitethorn
name?
Then, without warning, the smugness froze, shattering like thin ice beneath a stone.
The cold muzzle of a pistol pressed into the back of Joaquin’s skull.
“Try giving her that order, and I will put a bullet through your head before you finish the
sentence.”

Joaquin blinked, then burst into raucous laughter. “Excellent! As expected of my daughter–in- law! I knew you had spirit, and I adore it!”
Julius stared at Quinn across the debris–strewn room, struck speechless; though half her body remained hidden behind his father, the steady gun in her hands spoke volumes.
Through the splintered doorway, he caught only half a silhouette, yet it was enough.
He knew with the certainty of heartbeat and breath that the figure was Quinn–his Quinn, the woman he loved more fiercely than life itself.
He had moved heaven and earth to keep her safe. Yet here she was, ignoring every danger to track him into this nightmare compound.
Moments earlier, when chaos erupted, her voice had cut through the gunfire, ordering him to hit the floor. That single command shattered the stalemate and turned the tide.
Now, he wondered if the fighters trading blows with his father’s guards outside were Quinn’s people, placed here under her quiet, calculated orders.
“What a pity,” Quinn said, her tone edged with steel. “I never wanted you as a father–in–law.”
“Do you truly have the nerve to pull that trigger?” Joaquin drawled, amusement flashing in his eyes. “What happens when the blood on your hands refuses to wash away?”
“Had fear ever stopped me?” Quinn replied, finger steady on the trigger. “I joined the Falcon Special Forces to do what weak hearts won’t. The barrel rests against your skull for a reason–if the situation demands it, I will fire.”
In her training, the instant a situation pushed beyond control, one well–placed shot remained the safest, cleanest solution.
“Then let’s see it,” Joaquin said, completely unhurried. “I won’t lift the hypnosis on Laura, so what will it be–do you kill me or not?”
This time, the decision rested with Quinn.
“You don’t deserve to make Quinn pull the trigger,” Julius growled, leveling his own gun at his father’s chest.
Joaquin showed no fear. A glint of exhilaration lit his eyes, as though he could hardly wait for the bullet. But Quinn’s next words smashed that anticipation to pieces.

Chapter 636 Mysterious Newcomers
Julius, stand down Quinn ordered, voice calm yet commanding. He isn’t worth you doing
But Quinn–Julius began, anguish roughening his voice…
“Do as I say. Lower the weapon,” she insisted, leaving no room for debate…
Her tone carried a quiet power, smoothing every jagged edge of his panic. Conflict flickered across Julius gaze, but at last his arm dropped, and the muzzle pointed at the floor.
“Go on, kill me,” Joaquin taunted, eyes alight with feverish delight. “Aren’t you desperate to keep Quinn and your unborn child safe? One twitch of my thumb, and I’ll detonate the bomb in this villa. Quinn will die, and so will the baby?”
Julius face blanched as the threat landed.
“If she dies, do you truly think you’ll live?” Julius shot back, voice low and lethal.
“Dragging the one you love to the grave seems poetic.” Joaquin laughed, eyes savage. When she’s gone, you’ll walk the same path I did. You’ll become me.”
In that instant, he was pure madness personified.
“I swear I’ll end you!” Julius roared, raising the pistol once more.
Quinn’s voice sliced through the standoff. “You’re talking about the explosives hidden under the villa? Bad news for you–I had my team defuse them all.”
