“Then make me fall for you again!” The words tore from him. “Quinn, weren’t you the one who loved me so fiercely? Who fought to save me? Even unconscious in childbirth, you kept whispering my surname. Shouldn’t you be risking everything now to make me love you again?”
“Do you actually want to love me again?” she asked quietly.
He fell silent, no answer finding its way to his lips.
He hated the idea of giving every shard of himself to a woman, as people warned.
Yet the prospect of divorcing her was equally unbearable.
Before meeting her again, he could pretend indifference.
After seeing her, the notion of her walking out of his life plunged him into an icebound abyss.
Every familiar shape in his world seemed poised to vanish into darkness alongside her.
They stood motionless, staring straight into each other’s eyes, the air between them so taut it seemed it might snap and scatter the tension across the room.
Then, as if a silent cue had been fired, Quinn shot out a hand, caught the silk tie at Julius‘ throat, and yanked him forward with a savage decisiveness that belied her fragile frame.
Their noses almost brushed; Julius felt the feather–light warmth of her breath scatter across his cheeks like the first hint of rain before a storm.
She had been a coma patient until mere days ago–no muscle tone, no strength–yet in that instant, her grip seemed forged of iron and will.
He could have shrugged her off with a flick of his wrist, yet he chose instead to surrender, allowing her to steer him like a prize she already owned.
“You want-” Julius began, voice low, sliding toward some inevitable demand.
The sentence snapped in half because, without ceremony, her mouth sealed over his, cutting off everything but the sudden roar of his heartbeat.
She’s kissing me?
His mind emptied, but his body remembered; when she pressed for more, he obediently

A once–familiar electricity unfurled from the meeting of mouths, rippling outward until nerve in him hummed with the same forgotten melody.
He had no idea how long that current lasted before her whisper slipped into his ear.
“Well, what about now? Do you still want to fall in love with me again?”
“I do,” he murmured before he could stop himself.

The confession hung between them, sweet and dangerous, and only then did he register the weight of what he had allowed to slip free.
“Quinn, do you even know what you just did?” Julius asked, the shadows in his gaze shifting like restless storm clouds.
He found himself yearning for the taste she had left on his lips. Worse, a petulant corner of him complained that she had pulled away far too soon.
“Of course I know. A wife kissing a husband who’s finally home–how is that a problem? Unless, of course, you hated having me kiss you?”
He said nothing, only pressed his lips together; the absence of disgust startled him more than any revulsion could have. It felt as though every muscle, every memory etched in bone, kept whispering that he had once loved this woman with his whole being.
“If you don’t hate it, then I’d like us to share more moments like this. After all, you said you want to fall for me again, didn’t you?”
Julius glared at her, a sudden awareness blooming that he was the one pinned inside her grasp, a pawn beneath her fingertips.
He, who had never surrendered the reins to anyone, felt the balance tilt.
A disturbing question surfaced: when they had been in love before, had he been the one ruled by her then, too?
“Fine then. Let’s see how long it takes you to make me fall in love with you again. Maybe—just maybe once I do, I’ll agree to lift the hypnosis and let every lost memory return.”
“It sounds like you’d rather deny that the man you used to be loved me deeply.”
“If I loved you that much, why would I have let them wipe my memory so easily—why would I choose to forget us?” he said with mockery.

Quinn lowered her lashes, her gaze drifting to the watch on Julius‘ left wrist, its ticking hands an accusation she didn’t need to voice. “Because you wanted to stay alive,” she said.
“So if I truly loved you, I should have died with you the moment everyone decided already gone, shouldn’t I?”
you were
“No! You stayed alive because you believed I would fight my way back, even if I had to crawl. You chose to live so you could be here when I returned to you.”
Whenever Quinn pictured the agony Julius must have suffered while she was lost to him, it felt as though a mountain pressed against her ribs, squeezing the air from her lungs.
At the same time, a swarm of razor–sharp blades seemed to flay her heart, carving her apart inch by inch.
“Julius,” she choked, tears flashing in her eyes, “I’m… so unbelievably grateful. You stayed alive, you held on, and you waited for me.”
Even if every memory of their former love had been scrubbed from his mind—even if his gaze felt distant and his voice carried winter in it–none of it mattered so long as he was still breathing.
He could only stare at Quinn, silent and unmoving, as though his voice had slipped out of the room ahead of him.
Leaving Julius‘ suite, Quinn crossed the corridor and entered the adjoining room.
Her daughter, Dawn, slept curled on the bed, while Rowan and Gavin kept quiet vigil at the bedside.
“Gavin, how is Dawn’s health?”
“Long–term malnutrition has left her smaller than most girls her age, but there are no serious complications for now. Once we return home and give her a few weeks of proper care, she should recover.”
