He said, “You really don’t remember Barry? Come on, he’s just up ahead. Let’s go see him.”

Right now, Nathan only had eyes for Nina. He even forgot Benjamin was there.

Benjamin watched Nathan like this and said nothing.

He only took a few long strides to catch up, then asked, “Nathan, about your missing little sister… did she have any special marks on her body?”

“Yes,” Nathan answered without hesitation. “She had a birthmark.

“On her thigh—a small red one shaped like a flower.

“There was also a tiny mole on her waist, not very noticeable.

“And on her ankle, when she was a few months old, she had a hemangioma. Mom took her to the hospital to get it removed, but I don’t know if there’s still a trace.”

Nathan remembered every single detail about his sister’s body and spoke of them in vivid detail.

Besides the birthmark, he went on to talk about little Mia’s habits and food preferences.

“She loved candy and meat. Hated egg yolks—if she tasted one, she’d spit it right out. She wasn’t allergic; she just didn’t like them. She was very allergic to strawberries.

“She wouldn’t eat kale, but she loved broccoli stir-fried in butter.

“She responded to gentleness, not force. We never even had to be strict with her. She was sweet and easy to soothe.

“Everyone who met her adored her.”

When Nathan mentioned how “sweet she was, Nina-who’d been listening in on the adults’ talk -immediately piped up, “Nina good too! Nina good!”

She never missed a chance to declare herself a good girl, too.

Nathan laughed and couldn’t resist kissing her chubby hand again.

He actually wanted to kiss her cheek.

But he thought better of it-he didn’t want to make Benjamin uncomfortable by being too familiar with Nina.

So he settled for kissing her hand and rubbing his cheek against her soft little face.

As Nina put in a word occasionally, Nathan’s sadness cased a little. At least he didn’t cry.

When he was alone, thinking of his sister, the tears always fell.

Nathan said, a little embarrassed, “Okay, enough of that.”

He felt he had talked too much. Benjamin had only asked casually, yet he’d poured out everything.

He smiled, carried Nina forward, and started chatting with her instead.

“Nina, want to stay for lunch today? The food here is really good.”

Nina answered instantly, “Okay!”

This little social butterfly loved it when people talked to her.

She responded to Nathan with great enthusiasm.

Nathan adored her personality.

The two of them were soon deep in conversation.

Nina even started tattling.

She touched her eyes and told Nathan about them.

“Eyes hurt.”

Nathan jumped. “What happened? Does it hurt a lot? I’ll call the doctor right now.”

Benjamin calmly explained from the side, “She’s fine now.

“A few days ago, when she was out playing, another kid threw sand in her eyes. They’re healed.”

Nathan scowled when he heard about the sand incident.

“Some kids really need their hands smacked. If Barry ever did that, his mom would kill him. She already scolded him last time he pushed Nina.”

Nathan’s wife, Lily Wilson, was a lawyer.

Maybe because she talked so much at work, at home, Lily hated lecturing.

Nathan was the one who reasoned with the kids..

If reasoning failed, Lily would silently bring out the palm strikes to remind their son that a childhood without a spanking or two was incomplete.

Even Nathan was a little scared of Lily, let alone Barry.

Nathan kept chatting with Nina the whole way until they reached the front courtyard.

Barry was playing there with his remote-control car.

The moment Nina spotted the car, her chubby body started wriggling wildly.

“Down!” She didn’t want Nathan to hold her anymore.

Nathan set her down and walked with her over to Barry.

Barry’s little face had been tense from the second he saw Nina.

He still had vivid memories of being sat on and beaten while crying the last time!

The moment Nina appeared again, Barry instinctively stepped back.

“Y-you… why are you here?” Barry clutched his remote, staring at Nina warily.

Nathan stepped forward to smooth things over. “Nina, play nicely with Barry this time, okay? No fighting.

“Barry, take Nina to play. Can you do that?”

Barry really didn’t want to play with Nina.

But Nina nodded her little head, then pointed at the car on the ground. “Car!”

Nina loved toy cars. She had ones just like it at home, but she still wanted everyone else’s too.
