Nina decided she was going to fight bad guys again.
Amelia’s eye twitched sharply. “Absolutely not,” she said,

“Nina, didn’t Mommy and Daddy, Grandpa and Uncle Daniel, and your teachers all tell you? You must not fight bad people anymore. Aren’t you listening?”
Nina, clutching her toy gun, lifted her little chubby face defiantly. “No listen.”
She said it with zero guilt.
Amelia felt her blood pressure spike right away.
But she still didn’t lose her temper, keeping her voice soft. “Fighting bad people is very dangerous, Nina. You could get hurt. If you get hurt, you’ll have to go to the hospital. Do you ever want to get hurt?”
Nina shook her head right away. “No hurt!”
Seeing her cooperate, Amelia cooled down a bit. Her voice softened. “Then will you still fight bad guys?”
Nina said, “Yes!”
She patted her oversized toy rifle. “Nina is police.”
Amelia took a deep breath-she couldn’t let Nina go out again without making this perfectly clear.
She said, “Nina, put the gun down. I need to have a serious talk with you.”
“No. My gun,” Nina said, completely uncooperative-her little body was full of defiance.
Amelia took another deep breath. Talking sense to her is useless.
“Nina Graham, bend over,” she said.
Hearing herself being called her full name, Nina’s face turned to panic.
“Mommy, Me Nina!” She hated being called by her full name!
Amelia didn’t argue. She pulled Nina over and laid her down on the sofa.
Then she said, “Nina, listen to me: if you see a bad guy again-especially one with a knife-you must not run up and fight him. If you do, Mommy will spank you
With that, she delivered several firm swats to Nina’s bottom.
Nina burst into tears.
After her spanking, Nina sobbed, grabbed her toy gun, and ran to find William. “Grandpa! Grandpa! Mommy hit! Nina… Nina die!”
She ran to tattle, crying loudly, and soon Amelia heard William’s voice soothing Nina. “Nina, don’t cry. I will get you a cookie. Nina, what your mommy said is right, you know. You really shouldn’t fight bad guys.”
William doted on Nina, but when it came to discipline, e never undermined Amelia-he never stopped

Nina continued to sob. William picked her up and carried her outside to look at the dogs, hoping to distract her.
He said, “Let’s see what the doggies are doing. Nina, do you like the doggies?”
Nina still sniffling, looked at the two big dogs and said, “Yeah.”
With William comforting Nina, Amelia sat on the sofa for a moment to rest.
Benjamin wasn’t back from the office yet.
Ever since Nina was born, Benjamin had been forced to cut down on his work hours.
Nina had so many things going on, and Benjamin often ended up dealing with her stuff.
Lately, Benjamin had been consolidating and handing off several business areas to Daniel.
Compared to Benjamin, Daniel still had a bit more free time.
His progress in pursuing Alice was still unknown to the family, but Benjamin had lost patience waiting for him to settle down before taking on more work.
With Nina gone, the living room fell into a rare quiet.
Amelia leaned against a cushion, finally able to relax and check her phone.
She first exchanged a few messages with Megan.
While chatting, Jagger-who always seemed to show up out of nowhere from time to time-sent her a
message too.
He was asking her to dinner again.
This time, he brought up their high school days.
His message was full of regret, saying he wished he’d done more for her back then.
Hearing this, Amelia quickly tried to comfort him.
She was genuinely grateful for his kindness during that time.
As they chatted, Amelia ended up agreeing to go to dinner with him.
However, she asked if she could bring Nina along.
Jagger sent a smile meme and replied, “Of course you can.”
He still didn’t believe she had a kid, thinking she was making it up.
Since Jagger was in Averton, Amelia scheduled dinner for the next day.
After finishing her chat, Amelia checked the time.
It was past seven in the evening.

After her spanking, with both Benjamin and Daniel out, Nina had stuck close to William all evening.
She only came looking for Amelia when it was time for bed.
“Mommy,” Nina mumbled, rubbing her eyes as she snuggled up to Amelia, “I no mad.”
