After relaying the information, Lucien lowered his voice and laid out his plan. “Those bullies like picking on people, right? Starting tomorrow, they’re going to find out what it feels like.”
Barry agreed instantly, “Yeah! We’re kids, too. We could do the same and it wouldn’t even be a crime.”
The adults’ way of resolving things didn’t involve hitting back.
At best, they could make the bullies’ families pay damages, get the bullies a note on their school records, and make things hard for their parents.
But when it came to the actual bullies, the adults couldn’t touch a hair on their heads.
If the adults couldn’t do it, Lucien and the other boys would.
Everyone was finding their own way to deal with what happened to Nina.
Nina played in the corridor for a while before deciding she wanted to go home.
Even though Amelia had promised no shots, being in the hospital still made her uneasy.
“Mommy, tummy hungry,” Nina said, looking down at her belly. “Tummy no food.”
“Okay, let’s go home and eat right now,” Amelia said.
Amelia took Nina home for dinner, while Benjamin stayed behind to finish handling matters.
As time passed, the bullies did get a note on their records. But when Benjamin caught their eyes, he saw no remorse-just fear, and beneath that, a thick layer of hatred.
The whole ordeal dragged on late into the night. By the time Benjamin got home, Nina had already eaten, bathed, and changed into her one-piece pajamas-pale beige with little sea creatures printed on them.
She was showing off by doing little somersaults on the bed for Amelia.
“Mommy, look! I am so good!” She put all her effort into it and actually managed a somersault.
Amelia was busy picking up the toys scattered across the bed.
“Slow down, sweetie. Be careful you don’t fall off,” she warned.
But just as she said it, Nina tumbled right onto the floor.

Benjamin walked in just in time to see it.
The little tumbler sat up, looking dazed.

She didn’t cry immediately. Instead, she looked up at Amelia and announced, “Mommy, I fall.”
Then, her lower lip trembled. “I hurt!” she wailed.
Benjamin quickly scooped her up.
Nina cried on his shoulder for a good few minutes before settling down. He put her back on the bed.
Back on the bed, it wasn’t long before Nina got her head down again, trying to flip over. “Mommy, again!”
This time, both Amelia and Benjamin stood guard.
But Nina wouldn’t have it. “Mommy, no close! Daddy, go ‘way!”
The very determined little girl, full of energy, kept tumbling around on the bed.
For half an hour, she was bouncing around nonstop, falling off the bed twice more.
After the second fall, Nina finally calmed down, holding her head and giving up.
Watching her finally settle, Amelia felt a mix of amusement and heartache.
“Alright, that’s enough. Time for sleep. Any more falls and you’ll hurt yourself,” she said, nodding to Benjamin to turn off the light.
In the darkness, Nina wasn’t ready. “Light on!” she yelled.
Benjamin ignored her.
After washing up and changing into his own pajamas, Benjamin lay down on one side of her.
Amelia was on the other.
Sandwiched in the middle, Nina was still unwilling to give up.
She yelled again, “Light on!” Getting no response, she blinked, then suddenly called out, “Ben. Light on.”
Benjamin and Amelia, pretending to be asleep, opened their eyes in the dark.
They stayed quiet, though.

Nina called “Ben!” a few more times, but when he still didn’t answer, she finally flopped onto her back with a huff and wriggled around until she found a comfortable spot to sleep.
Exhausted from the day, Nina fell asleep quickly once everyone ignored her.
After she was out, Amelia couldn’t hold back a quiet laugh. “Benjamin, did you hear that?”
Benjamin didn’t make a sound.
Amelia turned on the small night light and looked over at Benjamin, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
“Benjamin, don’t play dead. You heard her, right? Nina called you ‘Ben’! Ben?” she teased, trying out the nickname herself.
As Amelia was laughing, Benjamin suddenly reached over, picked up the sleeping Nina, and moved her to the side.
In one swift motion, he closed the distance between himself and Amelia.
Their noses were almost touching, and as Amelia looked into Benjamin’s deep eyes, she slowly stopped laughing.
“Benjamin,” she said, not daring to use the nickname anymore. “You… you should go to sleep.”
Amelia knew that Benjamin didn’t like staying up late either.
Her urging was cut off as Benjamin’s lips met hers once more.
They kissed often, and by now, Amelia was already very used to the feel of Benjamin’s lips against hers.
