Chapter 56-2

“I am so sorry. I didn’t know.” I said apologetically to her, as I felt bad for asking, but then, on the other hand, I finally had an answer to what happened to them all those years ago.
Unfortunately, there was still one question that lingered in my head, and that was why the town’s people were keeping it hushed, making me wonder if the murderer was one of their own. I wanted to ask her if the person responsible was caught, but I knew that would be pushing my luck by asking her.
“How would you know? It happened so long ago. Actually, it happened right before your mother left town. Funny thing is, the murders all stopped after your mother left.”
My eyes narrowed as I stared at her, as it felt like she was insinuating that my mother had something to do with them. I knew my mother better than anyone, and I knew that she wouldn’t even hurt a fly, let alone kill
someone.
“My mother would never hurt anyone, if that is what you are insinuating.” I finally said back to her, now upset that she would even suggest such a thing.
“Oh no, that is not what I am suggesting. I didn’t mean for it to sound that way. I never believed that your mother did it. I just meant that it’s funny how the murders all stopped once she left, and now that you have come here, they are starting once again. It makes you wonder if the local authorities this whole time were wrong about who was responsible for their deaths.”
“What does me coming here have to do with it?” I asked her, wondering why she would think such a thing, because I honestly didn’t know a soul in this town other than my grandmother, whom I barely knew.
Mrs. Jacobs leaves out a nervous chuckle, making me wonder what she was hiding from me, as it was clear that she knew more than she was telling me about the murders. “I think I have said too much as it is. We aren’t supposed to speak of their deaths.”
“Why not?” I now ask her, confused about why their murders were such a big secret in this town, and why none of them were in the local paper or on the internet when so many were murdered.
“Listen, I have read your transcripts and know that! could help you get into a very good boarding school back in California with all the classes you need to finish your senior year. I know you turn eighteen next weekend, and if I were you, I would get out of here like your mother did and never come back to this place. I know your mother wouldn’t want you to get mixed up in what she had run from all those years ago. So, let me help you get out of here, before it is too late for you.”
I stared at her blankly, not knowing what to say to her offer, especially knowing that I could be back in California next weekend if I chose to be with her help. I would be away from everything that my mother had run from, but then I would be leaving behind my grandmother just like my mother had, and I didn’t know if I could do that to her in her fragile state right now after just getting here.
But as I looked away from her at the graves of all those that were murdered, I couldn’t help to think about Mazie as I saw her last name on the next headstone, and then Chance and Cash, and hell even Chase. I
