Chapter 93-1
Raven’s POV
Chase must have already taken off on horseback by the time I had convinced his brothers that he had done nothing wrong. A knot formed in the pit of my stomach when I realized that he was gone, thinking about confronting Mrs. Jacobs without him, since he was so close to her verses, the rest of us. But that didn’t stop me or anyone else from getting into Chance’s truck, as we all wanted answers about who was behind this.
My grandmother was gone, and I was now officially an orphan of the state for the next couple of days. I couldn’t help but pray that their legal system was backed up by a few days, because there was no way in hell I was going to return to one of those juvenile institutions.
I was more than messed up from my first visit there, and I couldn’t even imagine what this visit would entitle, as it was the third person now that I had lost in the matter of two months, which I was sure would look very suspicious to them. Although I knew that my parents died in a car accident, right before my own eyes, I had to wonder after what happened today if it truly was an accident, and if I was meant to die in it too.
It almost felt like someone was trying to kill my whole family, but I honestly had no clue why, as my grandmother seemed to be an innocent old lady that never bothered anyone, and as for my parents, hell, we had lived clear across the country and never once had dealings back here. But it all seemed to stem from here, leading me to believe that it had something to do with what happened here in Beaumont over twenty years ago.
I didn’t have much time to think about how the conversation was going to go with Mrs. Jacobs, because within no time I felt like we were pulling up the lane to her house. Unlike the dilapidated home my mother grew up in, Mrs. Jacobs had a modest farm–style home that looked to have been well maintained over the years.
As Chance brought the truck to a halt outside her house, I could feel my heart begin to race in my chest, nervous not only because we were about to talk to Mrs. Jacobs and hopefully find out what happened all those years ago, but also nervous about whether Jessica was home and if I would have to face her too, now knowing the truth that I was supposed to be Chase’s mate.
Mazie reached over, taking my hand into hers, as she asked me, “Are you okay?” As if she could feel my nervousness rolling off me.
“I am fine.” I said, lying to her, as I retracted my hand, not wanting her to feel how sweaty the palms of my hands were, as I wiped them on my pants, while I tried to collect myself.

At that same moment, Chance looked through the rearview mirror at me, as he said, “Don’t worry. Let me do all the talking.”
I was more than happy to let him do all the talking, but I still would have felt better if Chase had been here with us. Unfortunately, what I wanted and what I was getting were two different things, and I just prayed that she was forthcoming with the information.
Chance and Cash were the first two to exit the truck, and I watched as they both paused, looking around the opening that the house sat in at the foot of the mountain, as if they sensed something. Moving to open my door, Mazie stopped me by grabbing a hold of my arm, making me turn to look at her as my eyebrows furrowed, wondering what the hell was going on.
Mazie slowly let go of my arm, as she let out what sounded like a nervous chuckle, before she finally said, “Maybe it’s best if we let the boys check out the property first to make sure it
is safe.”
I turned to stare out my window, as I now watched Chance and Cash move around the front of the truck towards a car that was parked in the driveway. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the car didn’t belong to either Mrs. Jacobs or Jessica, leading me to wonder if she had company. If this was the case, then we had clearly come at a bad time, as I was sure that we wouldn’t get any information out of her.
