Chapter 639: Playing Hardball
Of course she knew. “Maggie’s not in” was just an excuse, Maggie was clearly holding a grudge over what happened and letting her cool her
heels on purpose.
But their project was in trouble, and Cole was their best shot. Even knowing full well that Maggie was jerking her around, Daphne swallowed
her pride and kept at it with Quinn: “Could you tell me when Ms. Miller will be back?”
“Sorry,” Quinn said. “She didn’t say, so I really couldn’t tell you.”
Daphne knew there was nothing more to say.
She didn’t push it. Just a flat “I’ll try again another time” before hanging up.
Then she called Julia and asked if she had Maggie’s number.
“I don’t.” Julia said.
“Could you do me a favor and get it from Franklin?”
Julia knew exactly why she was looking for Maggie. “Sure, no problem.”
Daphne sat in her car and waited. A few minutes later, Julia texted over Maggie’s number.
She thanked Julia, then called Maggie from her assistant’s phone.
Maggie had already figured she’d try a different number. She saw the unknown caller and let it ring.
Daphne hadn’t expected Maggie to be this guarded. She typed out a message and sent it over: Ms. Miller, this is Daphne, Director at Everly Group. I’d love to discuss a potential partnership – name your terms. Whenever works for you.
Maggie saw it. She also ignored it completely, set her phone down, and got back to work.
When no reply came, Daphne called again. Maggie blocked the number without a second thought.
Daphne had told herself she was being the bigger person, and Maggie’s reaction was exactly what she’d expected, but it still left a bad taste in
her mouth.
Not that Maggie cared. Once Daphne was blocked, she went right back to focusing on her own things.
She did have somewhere to be that afternoon, though – Wilson Group.
When she and a few of her engineers stepped out of the building. Daphne was right there waiting, her assistant at her side, cutting them off before they could get anywhere: “Ms. Miller. Can we talk?”
Maggie wasn’t surprised to find her still there. After that morning’s call, Johnny had done some digging and confirmed their project was in seriously hot water. If Daphne needed this done, she was going to have to show some patience.
Maggie’s expression stayed neutral. “Sorry, Ms. Everly. My engineers and I have urgent business to take care of.”
Maybe that was true. But Daphne didn’t budge. She looked Maggie straight in the eye. “I won’t take up too much of your time. I just need to know, can you give me a window?”
Chapter 639: Playing Hardball
“For that,” Maggie said, “you’re welcome to reach out to my assistant directly. She handles my schedule.”
