Jack stared at his phone for a second, then called Johnny back. “Mr. Gray, Ms. Miller isn’t accepting my apology, and she’s saying Cole won’t be working with us -”

“I respect her decision,” Johnny said.

The rest of Jack’s sentence died in his mouth.

After getting off the phone with Maggie, he’d had a nagging feeling that she hadn’t been venting or playing games. She’d meant it. And now Johnny’s response was just as clean-cut.

It finally clicked. Maggie and Johnny had never had any intention of working with them. Not once.

Jack was quiet for a few seconds. “You and Ms. Miller really are something else,” he said at last.

Before he’d called Johnny, he’d genuinely believed there was still room to work with. It hadn’t crossed his mind that Johnny would actually walk away from a deal this good just to have Maggie’s back.

“You’re too kind, Mr. Everly,” Johnny said.

Jack had nothing.

“Hope you find a solution to your project soon. I’ve got things to get to, take care.”

And Johnny hung up without a second thought.

Daphne had known her brother reached out to Johnny, and she found out how it went not long after they got off the phone.

Her face went dark. She shot to her feet like she was about to storm out. “If she’s got a problem with me, she can come at me directly. What gives her the right to -”

Jack watched her back and said evenly. “Go ahead if you want. But they’re not changing their minds.”

Daphne stopped cold. Her hands balled into fists.

Jack had already moved on mentally.

While they’d been spending the last few days going back and forth with Johnny and Maggie, they’d been looking at other options too, but there was simply no team in the country that could fill Cole’s shoes. Even if there were, none of them came close in terms of capability, and that

would seriously set the project back.

As for overseas, maybe. But it was an unknown quantity, and getting a deal together wouldn’t be quick or easy.
