Chapter 688

Dr. Mercer heaved another long sigh. “That young man certainly knows how to dump tough requests on my plate. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t mind taking on one more unremarkable student as a favor to him. But his girlfriend pales in comparison to Arthur and Maggie-she’s far too ordinary by our lab’s standards. What’s more, I haven’t witnessed any tangible growth in her research work throughout the two years following her graduation.”

His assistant fully understood the core of his professor’s frustration.

Julia’s academic credentials looked impressive on paper, yet every researcher working on the institute’s flagship projects held degrees from the world’s most elite universities. Even Maggie’s educational background didn’t stand out among their lab’s roster of prodigies.

By the institute’s rigorous benchmarks, Julia simply lacked the merit to qualify as Dr. Mercer’s formal student. Even if she secured a position within their research facility, standard protocol would bar her from immediate placement on the flagship elite research teams.

Dr. Mercer headed upstairs to retrieve his coat, stepping into the elevator alongside his assistant after finishing their conversation. Neither of them noticed a figure concealed behind a marble support pillar just a few feet away.

Yale waited until the elevator doors slid shut completely before stepping out from his hiding spot behind the column.

A short while later, he wandered back into the bustling throng of gala guests.

The second he returned to their small group, Rex spotted the grim, downcast look on his face and spoke up in concern. “You feeling under the weather? We can head out early if you need to rest.”

Yale shook his head faintly, his gaze drifting toward Maggie, who remained surrounded by a rotating circle of fellow researchers at the heart of the ballroom. “I’m fine.”

Rex followed the line of his sight and locked eyes on Maggie as well.

He shared Yale’s heavy, disheartened mood; pressing his lips together tightly, he quickly looked away.

Yale tore his eyes off Maggie and scanned the crowd, finally spotting Julia off in a quiet corner by herself.

He’d noticed Franklin, Julia, and Dr. Mercer slipping away together for a private conversation earlier in the evening, yet he’d had no clue what the three of them had discussed behind closed doors.

Now, every last piece of the puzzle had fallen into place.

Julia stood huddled with her entire family at that moment.

As he wandered over, he caught the tail end of Tracy’s question drifting through the chatter. “Julia, you got to talk to Dr. Mercer, didn’t you? How’d it go? Any good news to share?”

Before Julia could open her mouth to reply, Sophia cut in excitedly, unable to hold back her glee. “Didn’t you see Dr. Mercer and all those top-tier academics showering Julia with compliments a little while ago? There’s definitely good news coming out
