said nothing.
My eyes swept across everyone in the room.
Some smiled their congratulations, others gave thumbs up with praise, and a few even joked about waiting for our wedding nvitations.
Not a single one of them slipped up. Their performances were flawless..
Suddenly, I remembered all the parties this year, big and small–so many moments just like this one.
Alexander would remove my hearing aids, his eyes soft and tender as he spoke words I couldn’t hear.
Then he’d slip them back on.
Everyone would gush about how he was whispering sweet nothings, making promises, swearing he’d never hurt me.
f I hadn’t gotten my hearing fixed…
f I hadn’t heard the glass shards hidden beneath his honey–sweet voice, those vicious words wrapped in gentleness, I never would’ve known the truth.
Bianca suddenly let out an “Oops!”
She dropped her arm from Alexander’s shoulder and gave me a casual apology: “Sorry, Chloe, we’re all just used to messing around ike this. Don’t be jealous, okay?”
Alexander laughed and scolded her, “Give it a rest. You act like such a tomboy all the time–where’s your feminine side?”
hen the two of them started chasing each other around like nothing had happened.

closed my eyes, turned to leave, but sharp–eyed Bianca reached out to stop me.
Her eyes were full of disapproval. “Everyone came here out of respect for you, to celebrate your birthday, and now you just want to eave?”
lexander ruffled my hair, his voice coaxing like he was dealing with a stubborn child:
You haven’t even opened everyone’s birthday presents yet. Don’t throw a princess tantrum, okay?”
