I really didn’t have much appetite.
After picking at a couple bites of cake, I went back to my bedroom to get ready for sleep.
Mom was worried and sat by my bedside, asking: “Chloe, are you really sure about this?”
While fathers and daughters need to maintain some distance, Mom was the person in the whole world who understood and cared
about me most–she knew my feelings for Alexander better than anyone.
She knew exactly how much I liked him.
I looked down at the white hearing aid in my hand.
Suddenly I didn’t know what to say.
I just felt amazed at how much people could change.
When I was little and we first moved to this upscale neighborhood, I loved following Alexander around calling him “big brother.”
Our two families got along well and had business dealings together.
That day our families went together to visit the suburban factory, but unexpectedly there was an explosion.
I remembered the survival knowledge my parents had taught me and escaped.
But Alexander was trapped in the fire.
watched the flames growing fiercer before my eyes, watched him frozen in place, his figure gradually being swallowed by the fire.
don’t know where I found the strength.
efore anyone could react, I rushed in and pulled Alexander out with me.
ere almost out when the factory suddenly exploded again. I was severely injured by the blast and fell into a long coma.
Then I woke up, I couldn’t hear anymore.
ad and mom’s expressions were tense, while Robert and Claire Vance seemed to want to speak but held back.
nd I lay listlessly in bed all day, not wanting to talk or communicate with anyone.
lexander simply stopped going to school.
le kept bringing over lots of delicious snacks, but I remained unmoved.
hinking the hospital was too depressing, he secretly took me away and brought me to a shop to get fitted for this white hearing aid
my hand.

Chapter 4
The rice stalks and little fish patterns on it were drawn by his own hand.
Though he was just a child himself, he clumsily helped me put on the hearing aid and seriously promised: “Chloe, I’ll protect you from
now on.”
“See these rice stalks?” he said, pointing at the pattern. “They bend but never break in the wind. That’s how strong you’re going to be, Chloe. You’ll get better, I promise.”
“Fish only have seven seconds of memory, but I don’t.”
“I’ll always protect you, my princess.”
Only I remembered those childhood vows.
If nine–year–old Chloe had heard eighteen–year–old Alexander say “I really wish you hadn’t been saved that year when you were nine… should’ve just let you die.” she probably would have cried from hurt.
But over these years, I’ve been whispered about plenty of times because of my hearing impairment.
I’ve calmly accepted Alexander’s change in attitude.
People grow up eventually.
Back then I saved his life, and the Vance family wanted to make amends.
Over these years, they’ve given up nearly fifty percent profit–that’s already quite sincere.
Ultimately, we don’t owe each other anything anymore.
And I firmly believe that I’m a living, breathing person–not anyone’s accessory, and I don’t need to depend on others to live.
Therefore, I looked up at Mom and said firmly: “I’m sure.”
