Chapter 7
I knelt down and held her gently, patting her back to calm her.
She was just a little kid. Of course being dragged away by strangers terrified her.
My chest ached. I kissed the top of her head.
‘If this happens again, I’m calling the cops!”
Victoria slammed her teacup on the table, sneering.
Who the hell do you think you are? She’s MY granddaughter. I don’t need permission from some outsider.”
Peyton pressed closer to my back.
I stroked her head, signaling she was safe.
You just called me an outsider. So you kidnapped a stranger’s kid. That’s a crime, isn’t it?”
she was too angry to speak, her face darkening.
Vivian rushed over, trying to smooth things over.
Mrs. Hawthorne, please. Don’t let her upset you.”
Then she turned to me, smiled sweetly.
This child isn’t just yours, Quinn. She’s Jasper’s too.”
I get it. You loved him. So you had his baby in secret after he dumped you.”
But showing up at his company? Making sure he found out about her? That wasn’t an accident, was it?”
Now that he’s acknowledged her, you’re dragging her back to your sad little life. Where she can’t even eat cake. She’s not a tool for you to climb the social
adder.”
You seduced him, stole him from me. I let that go. But now you’re using a child now?!”
n her version of events, she was the devoted girlfriend who stepped aside.
nd I was the homewrecker who got knocked up and came crawling back.
stared at her. “Keep lying to yourself.”
ictoria slammed her hand on the table again, furious.
That child is a Hawthorne. I dare you to take her out of this house.”
Trash like you. Having a kid out of wedlock. What could she possibly learn from you?”
eyton cried. I hugged her tightly, rubbing her back.
Ivian stepped closer, bending down, waving at Peyton.
It’s okay, sweetie. Come to Mommy.”
omething inside me snapped.
slapped her hard.

Chapter 7
“Whose mommy?”
Vivian clutched her cheek, stared at me in shock.
She tried to swing back, but a large hand shot out, grabbing her arm.
Jasper.
His dark eyes glinted coldly as he yanked her hand away.
I ignored everyone, picked up Peyton and walked out.
Jasper’s car was already parked outside the gate.
“I’ll drive you home.”
I didn’t move.
He repeated patiently.
I looked around–yeah, no cabs were coming.
Fine.
I got in the backseat, Peyton in my lap.
When we got home, I sent Peyton to her room, then went back outside to deal with Jasper.
He was still standing by the door, waiting.
When he saw me, he crushed his cigarette and tossed it in the trash.
Before I could say anything, he spoke.
‘Marry me.”
[ froze.
It took a second for his words to register.
I blinked. “Because of Peyton?”
He looked at me. “If I said no… would you believe me?”
I shook my head.
He chuckled. “Doesn’t matter. Either way, here’s the situation.”
‘My mother knows about Peyton now. She’s not gonna let a Hawthorne grow up outside the family.”
“What happened today? It’s gonna keep happening. And she has the power to make sure you never see Peyton again.”
“You’ve got two options.”
“Marry me. Or risk losing your daughter.”
