The door slid shut, and Katherine looked at the middle-aged man sitting across from her. He sipped his coffee slowly. He did not acknowledge her. He did not invite her to sit.

Katherine understood this was meant to put her in her place.

Gavin had never liked her. Back then, Elijah had kept him in check, so Gavin could not openly say much.

But now, because of what happened years ago-the pregnancy and her leaving-even if Elijah wanted to keep her, Gavin finally had grounds to oppose it. He had no reason to give her a pleasant face.

The cup hit the solid wood table with a heavy thump. Gavin lifted his authoritative gaze toward her. “I haven’t asked you to sit, yet you take a seat on your own. Do you have no manners?”

“Does Mr. Gavin prefer being looked down on?” Katherine replied calmly.

Katherine had been standing while Gavin was seated. From that angle, she had indeed been looking down at him.

Gavin frowned, his gaze growing sharper after her response. He studied her carefully. “You haven’t changed much in five years.”

“You’re joking, Mr. Gavin. I am no longer the person I was back then.”

“You look exactly like the person I disliked five years ago.”

Gavin spoke as he took another sip of coffee.

Katherine raised a brow slightly. There was no trace of displeasure on her face. “That’s fine. After all, even you can’t make everyone like you can you?”

Gavin wanted to intimidate her and humiliate her. She had no intention of quietly accepting it.

“Mr. Gavin called me here today surely not just to insult me?”

Gavin cut her off with a cold snort and sneered. “Is that so? Whether you couldn’t leave or didn’t want to leave, only you know the truth. I agreed to the marriage because your father once saved my father. I allowed you to marry my most capable son. Yet in just three years, you gave the Grants such a surprise. Katherine, perhaps the Grants underestimated you.”

Katherine knew that for someone like Gavin, who was used to standing above everyone and judging from a distance, no explanation would make him understand her grievances back then. So she did not waste her breath.

“Mr. Gavin, you didn’t call me here to dig up the past. The divorce is what really matters, isn’t it?”

After hearing that, Gavin did not continue the topic. He said coldly, “Come in.”

At the door, Wrenlee walked in holding a check and gently placed it in front of Katherine.

Katherine lowered her gaze and glanced at the check before her, the corner of her lips lifting almost imperceptibly.

The amount on the check was substantial.

“That’s quite generous of you, Mr. Gavin.”

Gavin took an unhurried sip of coffee. ‘I hadn’t planned to interfere. Now I have to. Katherine, based on what you did five years ago you will never step into the Grant family again. Take the money and leave. Do not make his uglier than it needs to be.”

Katherine stared at the check, her slender fingers lightly tapping against it. She said nothing.

“Not enough? You can ask for more.”
