WILLOW
I had turned off my phone before stepping out of the car.
Mr. Fawn had called three times that morning, and I knew exactly that it was for another passive–aggressive reminder that I was falling behind. As much as I want to prove him wrong, this day was the day to finally cut a cord that had been holding onto me for years.
I stood outside the towering building of Hale Enterprises once again, staring up at the building.
I had just come from my morning class, and I was quite exhausted. However, I was determined to finish this once and for all.
I inhaled slowly and walked inside.
The lobby still smelled the same. I walked to the front door and saw the same front desk lady.
It hit me that I didn’t even remember her name. I had seen her for years and endured her assessing glances, but I never bothered to know her name.
She looked up with a smile, but when she saw it was me, her expression changed immediately.
“Mrs… Hale?” she muttered. Hearing her call me that made me want to giggle.
She was one of the few who knew the truth about my marriage because she had granted me private access to the upper floors countless times. Aside from her, only a handful of Marcus’s friends had known.
They were never fond of me.
I had always known that.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her tone filled with disbelief, as though I no longer had the right to stand in this building.
Which, technically, I did not.
I let a small smirk form.
“I am serving the divorce papers today,” I said calmly. “I am assuming you want me in?”
Her mouth parted slightly.
“You really went through with it?” she whispered.
I tilted my head.
“Open the gates.” I said evenly.
She swallowed. “How do I know you are telling the truth?”
I leaned closer to the counter, lowering my voice.

“I don’t want to be with him anymore.” I said. “You can make your rhove.”
I had always suspected she had it out for Marcus. There were moments over the years when her glances lingered too long. Perhaps she had it out for Tristan as well.
“You will not see me here again after this,” I continued smoothly. “So open the gates.”
For the first time since I had known her, she looked intimidated.
She gulped before nodding.
Her fingers moved over the console, and the security gates clicked open.
I did not thank her. I simply smirked and walked inside, entering the elevator right away. I was thankful it was only me inside.
The mirrored walls reflected a woman who looked composed, but I could see the tension in my shoulders. I pressed my lips together and adjusted the folder in my hands.
When the doors opened, I stepped out into the familiar corridor leading to Marcus’s office.
Right outside the door, his secretary stood with wide eyes.
“Miss Willow?” she asked in a questioning tone.
I smiled politely. “I will not be long.”
Her jaw tightened slightly, and for a brief second, I wondered how many times she had stayed late in that office.
I had suspicions. Perhaps they were not merely suspicions. It felt like Marcus had already cheated on me with her.
Before she could respond, I walked past her and pushed open the door.
Much to my delight, Marcus was inside.
He was standing near his desk, reviewing something on his tablet. He looked up at the sound of the door opening.
“Willow,” he said, straightening, his brows furrowing in curiosity. Then, the curiosity slowly turned into
interest
“What are you doing here?” he asked, taking a step forward. “Did you-”
He stopped himself.
But I knew what he had been about to say.
Did you come back? Did you finally realize you cannot survive without me? Did you crawl back like I always knew you would?
His expression softened in a way that almost fooled me. He even ran a hand through his hair, as though

suddenly conscious of his appearance.
“You look good,” he added.
I did not respond.
Instead, I walked toward his desk slowly.
Each step echoed in the room. He watched me carefully.
“Willow,” he said again, his voice lowering. “I know things got messy. But we can talk about this. I have been meaning to call you-”
I placed the folder on his desk.
The sharp sound cut through his sentence.
His eyes dropped to it instinctively.
The room went quiet.
