Lilian’s fingers tightened against the edge of the chair before she spoke, her voice trembling.
"...Can we leave now?"
The officer in charge glanced at me briefly, then turned back to her with a polite smile.
" I’m sorry, ma’am. But we just need to confirm one more thing."
His gaze shifted—
—to Kendra.
—and then to Lucas.
"Do you recognize anyone in this room?"
Lucas lifted his head slowly.
His eyes moved across the room—
First to me.
Then to Lilian.
Then—
They stopped on Kendra.
A beat of silence passed.
But before he could say a word—
A soft, broken sound cut through the air.
"No... take him away!"
All attention snapped back to Lilian.
Her shoulders trembled as she clutched her chest, her voice cracking.
"Please... take him away. I can’t stand seeing him... every time I look at him, I remember... the darkness... the pain..."
Tears streamed down her face as she broke into sobs.
The officer immediately gestured to the guard.
"Take him out."
Lucas was escorted out, the faint clink of his handcuffs echoing as the door shut behind him.
But before he left—
He passed Kendra.
He looked at her again.
This time, longer.
Meaningfully.
Then he was gone.
Silence fell.
Only Lilian’s sobbing remained.
I watched her.
Three years ago... this would have been enough.
Her tears, her trembling voice—back then, they had been enough to shake me completely.
Enough to make me lose judgment.
Enough to make me believe that everything was my fault.
But now...
I didn’t feel much.
The guilt was still there, faintly clawing at my chest—
but not enough to cloud my judgment.
All I felt was clarity.
A strange, unsettling clarity.
Even as she cried like this—
my mind remained calm.
Detached.
As if the weight I had carried for years... had quietly loosened its hold.
As if guilt alone was no longer enough to justify everything.
Then... what had I been holding on to all this time?
Was it really guilt?
Or something else entirely?
"...Miss Lilian, we understand this is difficult. Please take a moment," the officer said.
He straightened and picked up a file from the table.
"However, we still need to proceed."
He nodded to another officer.
"Play the recording."
Kendra’s head snapped up.
Her face drained of color instantly.
"...Recording?" she repeated, her voice barely audible.
The officer didn’t respond.
A device was placed on the table.
With a click—
The room filled with sound.
Static... then—
"...just make sure she doesn’t walk away from it unharmed."
Kendra’s voice.
Clear. Undeniable.
Lilian’s sobbing paused—just for a fraction of a second.
Then Lucas’s voice followed.
"You said just scare her—this is getting out of hand."
"Then handle it properly," Kendra snapped. "Do you think I’m paying you to hesitate?"
The recording stopped.
Silence pressed down on the room.
All eyes turned to Kendra.
Kendra’s lips parted—
As she was led away, she turned slightly—
Looking at Lilian one last time.
Something dark flickered through her gaze.
But she said nothing.
The door closed behind her.
Silence returned.
Lilian sat there, trembling, her eyes lowered—
as if everything had just collapsed around her.
Slowly—
my gaze settled on her.
And for the first time—
something didn’t feel right.
"Lilian—"
A man’s voice cut through the silence.
The door opened.
Lucas Summer stepped in, his expression tense.
"Brother..." Lilian called out softly as she stood and rushed into his arms.
"What happened? Why are you crying?" he asked, holding her.
Then his gaze shifted to me.
I stood up. "Lucas."
"CEO Blackwood."
"It’s good that you came. Please, have a seat."
He hesitated briefly before guiding Lilian back to her seat and sitting beside her.
"I received a call from your assistant asking me to come to the station."
At that, Lilian glanced up at me.
The officer quickly explained the situation.
Lucas’s jaw tightened.
"Don’t worry," I said calmly. "You don’t have to concern yourself with this. I’ll handle everything. Take Lilian home."
He didn’t argue.
He stood and helped Lilian up.
She kept glancing at me—
her lips parting slightly, as if she wanted to say something.
But in the end—
she said nothing.
She simply followed him out.
The door closed behind them.
But the unease in my chest—
didn’t fade.
