My grip on the phone tightened.
I suddenly remembered—
She couldn’t swim.
I closed my eyes.
"She almost drowned," Jane continued, "but thankfully, a staff member rescued her in time."
"Were they caught?" I asked.
"Yes, sir. The chairwoman handed the case over to the company’s legal team. The police confirmed the women have been arrested. They requested that Director Alicia come in to verify everything."
"Have they informed her yet?"
"No, sir. It was late, so they planned to tell her in the morning."
"Tell them not to call her. I’ll inform her myself."
"Understood, boss."
I ended the call and sat on the edge of the bed, letting out a long breath.
So that was why she looked so pale.
But... why didn’t she tell me?
Even when I asked her, she chose to hide it.
The thought lingered in my mind, refusing to fade.
Eventually, exhaustion took over.
And with unanswered questions weighing heavily on me...
I fell asleep.
On Sunday morning, I went downstairs early, intending to go for a run.
Maria was cleaning the living room and greeted me with a polite, "Good morning, sir," as I walked by.
I paused at the door, then suddenly stopped and turned back.
"Do you know why Alicia moved out of the master bedroom?"
"I forgot to tell you, sir," Maria said. "Last week, someone used a delivery to threaten Mrs. Blackwood. It contained a foul substance with a strong odor. It spilled on the sheets and the floor, so she moved out of the master bedroom."
I froze. "Why didn’t you tell me sooner?"
"You were away on a business trip at the time. Mrs. Blackwood asked me not to inform you."
My expression darkened. "Did you report it to the police? Do they know who did it?"
"We did report it. They discovered it was a high school student. He’s..."
At first, I felt nothing for the new girl who always visited.
Until she moved in and started calling me "brother."
She was polite, well-behaved. Every time I came home, she greeted me with quiet respect.
Years passed in the blink of an eye.
In the quiet corners of my life, Alicia had grown—silently, steadily—like a blooming plum blossom.
I watched her stir slightly, then stepped back, careful not to wake her.
Alicia’s POV
I felt like someone had been watching me.
But when I opened my eyes, the room was empty.
Maybe I was imagining things... I had gotten used to sleeping in the same room as Alexander.
I got up, freshened up, and got dressed. Just as I finished, my phone rang.
I glanced at the screen.
Nana.
