Chapter 216: Chapter 216: The Last Night

Cecelia: "..."

The owner also sold cigarettes and alcohol behind his counter. Damien’s gaze fell on the colorful cigarette packs, and a craving hit him. He asked Cecelia for her phone to buy a pack.

"Give me your phone."

Cecelia, still embarrassed about the owner’s misunderstanding, reflexively pulled a hard object out of her pocket.

Damien caught it, froze for two seconds, and shot her a suspicious look.

The owner, who had been beaming at Damien and was about to continue their chat, also froze for a moment before bursting into laughter.

"I knew it!"

Cecelia didn’t understand. Seeing the strange look Damien was giving her, she instinctively glanced down at his hand.

When she saw the small, blue, square box in his hand, her face turned crimson.

She scrambled to her feet and snatched the box back.

"I didn’t buy it! The inn’s proprietress must have put it there when she brought you lunch!"

Damien looked unfazed. "No need to explain. We’re an old married couple, after all. What’s not to understand?"

Behind the counter, the owner’s laughter grew even louder.

Too mortified to stay any longer, Cecelia shoveled down a few more bites, paid the bill, and fled as if escaping.

On the way back, she took out her phone and saw that it was already 9:30 PM.

Thinking about Candy and Annie waiting for her to come home, a wave of sadness washed over Cecelia.

While Damien lagged a few steps behind, smoking as he walked, she took the opportunity to call Candy.

Candy said she understood why her mom was working overtime so much lately, but she couldn’t help but sound disappointed.

After comforting her and Annie for a while, Cecelia returned to the inn, her mood heavy.

The kids were left at home without her, she had no idea how Shane Grant was doing in the hospital, and the fundraising now seemed very likely to fail. On top of all that, she was stuck here, sharing a room with this inexplicable man...

’What a complete mess!’

As soon as she entered the room, she went to the window and stared blankly into the distant, dark night sky.

Damien came in after her. He stared at her slender, dejected back for a moment before unbuttoning his coat and tossing it heavily onto the bed.

"Do you really hate being with me that much?"

Cecelia didn’t want to answer his question.

’Some things are better left unsaid. Why does he have to force me to admit it?’

Seeing her silent, pouting, the good mood from dinner completely evaporated.

His face grim, Damien turned on the television.

A highly-acclaimed period drama, "Parents’ Love," was playing.

The female lead was returning from the hospital when she ran into the male lead coming home from work. Noticing her foul mood, he asked, "Who upset you now?"

The female lead furiously slapped a report into his hand. "Who else could it be but you? Look what you’ve done!"

The male lead took the report and looked at it, his face lighting up with joy. "You’re pregnant again?"

The female lead stormed back home. In the courtyard, her sister-in-law was trying to soothe a wailing child.

Seeing her sister-in-law enter with a displeased look, she asked her brother.

"What’s wrong with my sister-in-law? Who made her angry again?"

The male lead leaned in with a mysterious and smug expression. "Your sister-in-law’s got something."

The sister-in-law looked confused. "Got what?"

The male lead’s face hardened, thinking she was being dense.

"She’s got a baby! What else could she have?"

With that, he went inside to coax his wife, leaving his sister-in-law standing in the courtyard, wailing in anguish.
