"Why do you have to make me confess? Just because you suspect I pushed your mother that day, I have to die? My daughter has to die too, is that it?"
"The truth of the matter is completely unimportant to you. What’s important is what you think, what you believe, and whatever makes you feel comfortable. A worthless life like mine is completely valueless in your eyes, isn’t it?"
"What’s my relationship with Shane Grant? Fine, I’ll tell you. He’s my savior. If it weren’t for Shane Grant, I would’ve been dead long ago, and who knows where Candy would have been sold off to... Damien Vaughn, I can be framed, I can die, but my daughter is still so young. Can you imagine how pitiful it would be for her to be sold from person to person? Your mother’s life is a life, but my daughter’s life isn’t, is that it?"
"Maybe you think I’m ridiculous. I finally managed to escape from you, only to reappear before you again and again like some clown. I’m not trying to get your attention, and I’m not trying to get close to you to gain something. Damien Vaughn, Shane Grant is far more of a gentleman than you are. He never thought about getting anything from you, much less using me to do it."
"I owe him too much. I’ve been indebted to him since the very first day I met him. I know you’re targeting him now to get back at me. He’s sick, and his company is about to collapse. As my savior, if I can’t do something for him, I’d be worse than an animal."
"I know I’m not capable of much. I know I’m throwing an egg against a rock. But I can’t just do nothing. I want to repay him. Even if there’s just a tiny, tiny, tiny sliver of hope, I want to fight for it."
"No matter what I say, you won’t understand. Someone like you, born at the top of the pyramid, someone who’s never had to accept help from others—you don’t understand the weight that the word ’gratitude’ can place on a person. Would you believe that I would die to repay his kindness? As long as he treats my daughter well after I’m gone. All I want is peace of mind."
Cecelia Archer finished speaking. Damien Vaughn slowly released her hand, and the two of them fell into a long silence.
Cecelia Archer didn’t know what he was thinking, and she didn’t want to.
A sense of defeat enveloped her, leaving her completely drained of energy.
The two of them just sat there until another driver passed by, furiously honking their horn at Damien Vaughn’s car before rolling down their window to curse at him.
"Fuck, you think you’re hot shit in that luxury car?! You own the road?! Parking wherever the hell you want! Fuck, I hope you get hit and killed one day!"
Cecelia Archer was finally jolted back to her senses and glanced at the dazed man beside her.
"It’s getting late. If there’s nothing else, can I go home now?"
’It’s getting late?’ Damien Vaughn glanced at the center console. 9:00 PM.
His expression blank, he started the car again.
After some driving around, at 9:20, the car stopped on a street that wasn’t particularly busy. Damien Vaughn turned off the engine.
"Do you know where this is?"
Cecelia Archer knew. She just hadn’t expected Damien Vaughn to bring her here.
This was where her brother was renting a place.
In truth, ever since the incident, Cecelia Archer had been very worried about her brother’s situation.
She worried that if Damien Vaughn couldn’t find her, he would go after her brother instead.
But she had been severely injured back then, unable to even care for herself, and she didn’t want to drag Shane Grant into it any further, so she had suppressed her longing for her brother.
She never thought Damien Vaughn would bring her here.
The calm that Cecelia Archer had just found was once again disturbed.
"What do you mean by this?"
She didn’t know what Damien Vaughn meant. She looked at him in confusion, but Damien Vaughn maintained his perpetually blank expression, leaning back against the seat with his arms crossed, his eyes fixed ahead.
"It means nothing."
"My brother, he..."
"Here he comes."
Cecelia Archer hurriedly followed his gaze and looked ahead.
In front of the car, her brother zipped past on a food delivery scooter, with Rocky on it.
It was unclear whether he was feeling unwell or had just been out with him for a long time, but Rocky seemed very sleepy, swaying precariously on the electric scooter. The sight made Cecelia Archer’s heart leap into her throat.
