She knocked on the car window. Damien slowly lowered the glass, revealing his expressionless face.
Cecelia Archer looked into his eyes. "Something’s wrong with Zeke Walton. He’s not in a good state. Aren’t you going to get out and check on him?"
Damien Vaughn peered through the opening at Zeke Walton’s puffy cotton pants, the cheap, garish delivery driver’s uniform that didn’t suit him, the battered electric scooter, and that stubborn back. A cold smirk touched his lips.
"Why should I check on him? If he needed my help, he’d come find me."
Cecelia Archer: ’...?!!’
’Weren’t they best friends who could talk about anything? How did things get this bad?’
’This is Zeke! Zeke, for crying out loud!’
She desperately wanted to ask Damien Vaughn what he and Zeke were fighting about, but time was short, and he probably wouldn’t want to tell her anyway. She had to drop it.
"Well, I’ll stay with him for now. I can report on the work another day. Should I leave the documents with you, or take them with me?"
Seeing her rushing around in a panic for Zeke Walton, a strange anger flared up in Damien Vaughn’s heart again.
’How long have they known each other? Would they even have met if not for me?’
’She’s so attentive to a newcomer like him, but so cold to me. Is she willing to get close to any man except me?!’
"You report when you feel like it and don’t when you don’t. Who do you think you are?"
Damien Vaughn was seething with rage. He turned his face away and stared ahead, his expression blank.
"If you can’t give your report today, then you don’t need to report ever. Our partnership with the Grant Group is terminated."
Cecelia Archer was stunned speechless by his absurdity.
’He’s going to terminate the partnership with the Grant Group over something so trivial? Is this a joke?’
’And does he really not care one bit whether Zeke lives or dies?’
Torn between her work and her concern for Zeke Walton, Cecelia Archer stomped her foot in frustration and tossed the scooter key through the window onto the seat.
"Then give me two minutes. I’ll get Zeke to come over."
She ran back to Zeke Walton’s side.
"Can you please get in the car with me first? We’ll deal with your problems after I finish my work report. You know Damien Vaughn’s temper. I had a hard time scheduling this meeting; if I don’t report today, I won’t get another chance."
’So, for my sake, he couldn’t even cut Cecelia a little slack?’
’Or had Damien completely written him off as a friend and was just using this as an excuse to give Cecelia a hard time?’
’Everything in this world is fake. Friendship, love, family—it’s all fake.’ Zeke Walton’s mood soured even further.
He let out a cold, listless laugh and sat down on the electric scooter.
"Can’t you see it, Cecelia Archer? We’ve already had a falling out. He stopped being my friend a long time ago. Why should I go looking for humiliation?"
Although Cecelia Archer had just suspected as much, she hadn’t been sure. But now that Zeke Walton had said it...
"Why? Aren’t you two childhood friends? Aren’t your families friends for two generations?"
"Because of Shane Grant... It’s all my own fault."
The more Zeke Walton spoke, the more he wanted to laugh. He tilted his head back to look at the sky, his face a mask of self-mockery.
"From the first moment I saw Shane, I thought he belonged to me. We were so happy together during that time, I thought... I was willing to do anything for him, even break with my family, even die. But what did I get? He never even gave me the time of day."
"When I was Young Mr. Walton, I was someone he could use, so he’d greet me with a smile. The second I wasn’t Young Mr. Walton anymore, I wasn’t even worth shit in his eyes. Ending up like this is my own damn fault."
Cecelia Archer knew Shane Grant had hurt him at the hospital that day. She wanted to say a few words in Shane’s defense, but inside the car, Damien Vaughn kicked the back of the driver’s seat.
"Honk the horn. Tell her to hurry up. Is she ever going to be done?"
