"We’re all family. There’s nothing that can’t be resolved by sitting down and talking things out calmly. You two should stop scolding him all the time. He’s still young. He doesn’t want to just walk the path you’ve paved for him at the company, and wanting to forge his own way is actually a good thing. Letting him see more of the world and gain some experience will be good for his character development."
"At the same time, Zeke, you also have to understand your parents’ difficult position. If you were a father, could you just stand by and watch your child do whatever they pleased without interfering at all?"
Mr. and Mrs. Walton were filled with gratitude for what he had done that evening and gave their son a warm welcome upon his sudden return. The meal was exceptionally warm and happy.
They talked about everything from their childhoods to the present, and then about the future. The meal lasted for over two hours.
Damien Vaughn hadn’t been drinking, so he drove himself home. Zeke Walton walked him to his car.
Looking at the man who was both familiar and a stranger, Zeke was momentarily at a loss for words.
After a long moment of thought, he finally managed to get a sentence out.
"I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pushed you today."
Damien Vaughn looked at the awkward figure in cheap clothes and reverted to his usual cold demeanor.
"There are plenty of things you shouldn’t have done, but you did them anyway, didn’t you? If I kept score of every single one, you would’ve angered me to death by now."
As he spoke, he raised a hand and gave Zeke Walton’s shoulder a couple of light punches.
"Alright, man up. Stop walking around with a long face all day."
"The real reason I had you come back today was to teach you something. Don’t think that having your parents’ support is a bad thing. Fate gave you superior resources the moment you were born, and that itself is a kind of advantage. When people call you a rich kid and say you only got where you are because of your parents, you don’t have to listen. That’s just their jealousy talking. It’s an advantage they’ll never have in their entire lives."
"If I hadn’t stood on my grandfather’s shoulders, if I didn’t have the title of the Vaughn Group’s eldest grandson, I would never have gotten to where I am today."
The real reason Zeke Walton was unwilling to join the family company or listen to his father’s arrangements was that he didn’t want to hear people say he was incompetent and had only gotten this far by relying on his parents.
But out of vanity and pride, he had never mentioned this to Damien Vaughn. He never expected Damien to see right through him.
Moreover, he had never imagined that Damien Vaughn would face a similar predicament.
Yet, when faced with such skepticism, this was Damien’s mindset.
Zeke Walton realized that although he had known Damien Vaughn for many years and knew he was highly capable, it was only today that he got a true glimpse of the man’s abilities.
After encouraging him, Damien Vaughn’s tone suddenly shifted.
"Starting tomorrow, you’re the young master of the Walton family again. I’m giving you one month to set up your web operations company and finalize supply and delivery deals with local fruit merchants. I want to see a profit by next month."
"I’ll have Ryan assess the market and compile the specific metrics for you. If I don’t receive the expected share of the profits in the second month, the five million I invested will be considered a loan. You will be responsible for all profits and losses, pay me interest every month from then on, and I will never partner with you again."
He was forcing Zeke Walton into a do-or-die battle.
Although his words were as harsh as ever, standing there at the gate of the home where he grew up, with his loving parents behind him, Zeke Walton felt a surge of confidence.
"Understood. I’ll do my best. Thank you, Damien."
Damien Vaughn returned alone to the villa where Cecelia Archer and Candy had once lived.
The bee stings on his legs and arms were swollen and painful. He took a handful of painkillers, and exhausted from running around all day, he finally drifted into a groggy sleep.
The next day, he arrived at the office on time.
Ryan was startled when he saw the light on in the President’s office.
"President Vaughn, when did you get back?"
