Soon, the Rh-negative blood arrived.
Candy was still unconscious. As the doctor prepared for the transfusion, Damien Vaughn stepped forward and picked her up.
"I’ll hold her for the transfusion."
"That’s not necessary, President Vaughn. She’s unconscious. It’s better if she lies down..."
"Don’t worry about it. I want to hold her."
At his insistence, Candy was nestled into his broad chest.
Damien Vaughn wasn’t sure if it was because the doctor said Candy might be his daughter, or simply because he hadn’t seen her in so long. Whatever the reason, his affection for her had reached an unprecedented level.
He couldn’t look at her enough, couldn’t touch her enough. Even now, holding her tightly, their body heat and breaths mingling, it still wasn’t enough.
Gazing at Candy’s beautiful sleeping face—her dark, thick eyelashes, her small, elegant nose, her lovely ruby-red lips—Damien’s fondness and heartache grew with every second. He couldn’t help but plant another kiss on her face.
Cecelia Archer watched from the side, a complicated feeling stirring in her heart.
Damien Vaughn’s arm still hadn’t fully healed, and the transfusion would take a while. Holding Candy like this would be exhausting for him.
And the way he looked at Candy was just...
"How is your grandfather?"
"He’s fine. Gwen Morgan is looking after him, so he’ll be okay."
Damien stared at Candy for another moment, then looked at Cecelia as if he had made up his mind.
"Cecelia, I want to talk to you."
He had never used such a serious, solemn tone to say he wanted to talk to her before. Cecelia didn’t know what he wanted to say and felt a strange sense of nervousness.
"What is it?"
"I want to be Candy’s father. Whether she’s my biological daughter or not, I want to treat her as my own. I want to marry you, and we can raise her together. Will you agree?"
Cecelia’s mind went blank. She thought she had misheard him.
"What?"
"Maybe you think this is very sudden, but I’ve wanted to say this for a long time."
Damien had never shown such a pleading, anxious expression before.
He was like a young man confessing to a girl for the first time, speaking with a difficult, almost awkward earnestness.
"I don’t even know what I was so arrogant about before, what I was so insistent on. I wanted to say these words to you countless times, but I could never get them out... Not until today. When I got the news about Candy, rushed to the rooftop, and realized I’d almost lost you both, I finally found the courage."
"Cecelia, I’m filled with regret and I’m terrified in hindsight. I can’t imagine if I had been even a little later today... I can’t bear the consequence of losing you. I really don’t want to lose you."
"I’ve liked you for a long time. I don’t even know when it started. Maybe it began the day I saw you again at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau, or maybe it was some day after that. But no matter when it started, I can say for certain that I’ve fallen deeply in love with you."
"I’m not a promiscuous man, Cecelia. Growing up, the only women who have been close to me are Gwen Morgan, Claire Clark, and you. But I have never had romantic feelings for Gwen Morgan!"
"Maybe my mother’s and grandfather’s actions have made you doubt my relationship with Gwen, but I promise you, there’s nothing between us."
Cecelia was shocked and confused.
’That day they went out together, she had clearly seen the mark on Gwen’s neck... Could it be that Gwen had deliberately deceived her?’
’But how could she explain them being seen together afterward?’
