Amina was acting incredibly strange today.
Zeke was speechless for a few seconds after she pushed him out of the bathroom. He ran out to find the housekeeper.
"Did Amina go out to meet someone today? Did something happen to upset her?"
The housekeeper, who was clearing the dining table, paused in surprise.
"She didn’t go out to see anyone, she was perfectly fine... oh, wait, I remember now. She did go out for a little while. When she got back, she went straight to her room to sleep. I don’t know who she saw."
’She went out, and came back just to go to sleep? That has to be it.’
Zeke went back to the room.
When Amina came out after her shower, he stared at her face.
"What on earth is wrong with you today? Who did you go see? What did they say to you? What upset you?"
Amina didn’t know a soul in Veridia. He couldn’t for the life of him figure out what had gotten to her.
Amina bit her lip, saying nothing. This was what Zeke had been afraid of. He sighed and walked over to her.
"Amina, after all we’ve been through, is there anything you can’t tell me? Be honest. What’s wrong? Did someone give you a hard time?"
Amina desperately wanted to tell him: ’Yes, your mother gave me a hard time. My brother and the others gave me a hard time. I don’t want to leave you.’
But she couldn’t.
She knew Zeke usually seemed like a gentleman, but when he truly got angry, he was terrifying.
If he went to violently confront her brother, or if he got into a huge fight with his family... Amina couldn’t imagine the consequences.
He was his parents’ only son. She couldn’t bear the thought of being the one to ruin their relationship.
Zeke kept staring at her. Thinking of the agreement she had signed that day, Amina slowly lifted her gaze.
"No one bothered me. I ran into an old classmate today. It was someone I had a crush on when I was a kid... and he said he likes me too..."
A ringing filled Zeke’s head. He felt like he’d been struck by lightning.
He never imagined *this* would be the reason Amina was picking a fight with him.
"A childhood classmate you had a crush on? And he likes you too? What the hell does that mean?"
Amina bit her lip, trying several times before she could speak.
"Zeke, we’re not right for each other. I think he and I are a better fit. Seeing him made me realize I’ve never forgotten him all these years."
Zeke stared at her, his eyes fixed on her face. He felt like he didn’t even know her anymore.
Ever since getting to know Amina, the two were rarely apart. Other than for work, he had never seen her interact with anyone else.
He’d always thought Amina’s world was simple and pure. He believed anyone else might betray him, but never her. And yet...
Zeke couldn’t accept it.
Growing up, hadn’t everyone doted on him, treating him like a prince? He hadn’t even batted an eye when a goddess from a prominent family like Simone Vaughn chased after him. Yet, he’d fallen for a woman who had nothing, and now this woman was dumping him?!
"What the fuck do you mean? You’re dumping me? You’re going to be with someone else? Do you have any idea what you’re saying?"
Zeke’s voice suddenly grew louder, and he stared at her like an enraged lion. Amina was startled.
She knew Zeke was deeply hurt and in pain. She was in pain too, but what else could she do?
"I’m sorry, Zeke..."
"Sorry?"
Zeke waited for several seconds, only to get those two words from her. He completely lost it.
"You fucking say sorry to me? So you’ve already decided, is that it? You two planned it all out, and you’re going to be with him? You’re dropping out of school? Or is he so capable he can support you and your grandmother? You’re going to run off to him? Good. Really good! Fucking great!"
With a CRASH, Zeke swept all the bottles and jars he’d bought for Amina off the vanity and onto the floor.
His shouting and the sound of things crashing startled her grandmother and the housekeeper, and they both came rushing in.
