"Is the patient’s information registered?"
Claire Clark went back to her office and brought out a handful of chocolates to share with the nurses, feigning a casual demeanor as she stood before them again.
The nurses’ eyes lit up at the sight of the expensive chocolates. They passed her the medical record book as they shared the treats.
"It’s done. Why are you so free today, Dr. Clark? And why are you so interested in this particular patient?"
Claire Clark didn’t immediately take the chart, replying nonchalantly.
"Free? I have an exam at the end of the month. I was just thinking I’d review some cases and learn more about the patients to broaden my knowledge. What, is looking at a case file bothering you? In that case, I won’t disturb you."
’How could that be?’
Dr. Clark was young, beautiful, and generous. Rumor had it she’d gotten her position through some very powerful connections and would likely be promoted soon. The nurses couldn’t suck up to her fast enough.
"No, no, we were just making small talk. You’re so nice, Dr. Clark. We love chatting with you. Please, take a look!"
Only then did Claire Clark take the medical record book.
One look, and she was stunned.
’Why was the patient a three-year-old girl?’
’Candy Archer? Cecelia Archer’s daughter? She has a son and a daughter?’
’Could she really be that lucky? Did that bitch actually have fraternal twins with Damien Vaughn?’
’But the child’s condition... leukemia?’
That single line of information left Claire Clark with mixed feelings of joy and worry.
The joy came from the fact that the daughter Cecelia Archer had secretly given birth to after dropping out of school had a very serious illness. She might just disappear soon and no longer pose a threat to Claire Clark’s future.
But at the same time, she was a little worried. The man Cecelia was with now was so powerful. ’What if he does everything in his power to cure her daughter...’
’Forget it, don’t overthink it for now. The most urgent thing is to find out if this child is related to Damien Vaughn.’
If there was no connection, she couldn’t care less if the girl lived or died. She wouldn’t even bother to give her a second glance.
But if she was Damien Vaughn’s biological child...
Annie had been running around for half the day and was getting tired. After eating his fill, he grew sleepy. Cecelia Archer gave him a quick wash and put him to bed on the companion cot next to Candy’s.
Just as he had drifted off to sleep, the room door was pushed open. A doctor, clad in a white coat, mask, goggles, and gloves—completely covered from head to toe—walked in.
Cecelia Archer assumed it was a doctor doing routine checks, so she stepped aside to give her space.
Claire Clark glanced sideways at Cecelia Archer through her goggles, then walked to Candy’s bedside to take a look.
The little girl had fair, delicate skin. Although her forehead was wrapped in gauze and her eyes were closed, you could still tell her features were beautiful. She bore a strong resemblance to Cecelia Archer—the makings of a true beauty even at such a young age.
She couldn’t help but curse inwardly: ’That bitch Cecelia Archer really knows how to have beautiful kids!’
Pretending to examine Candy, she checked the parameters on all the instruments. Then, she lovingly stroked Candy’s hair.
As if deeply concerned for the little one, she stroked her hair several times before turning to look at Annie on the other bed.
The little boy looked to be the same age as Candy. He also had fair, delicate skin, and his features were remarkably defined.
However, he didn’t really look like Cecelia Archer.
Claire Clark stared at him for a while longer, then reached out a tender hand and stroked his hair.
Although Cecelia Archer found the doctor’s behavior a bit strange, her two children were undeniably cute. They were often showered with praise by strangers on the street, so she didn’t think much of it.
Cecelia Archer watched as Claire Clark gently smoothed Annie’s hair a few more times before quietly leaving the ward.
Having obtained hair samples from both children, Claire Clark hurried back to her office, labeled them, and then sent a message to Damien Vaughn.
"Damien, my job is stable now. I just signed my permanent contract. Thank you for your help. Let’s have dinner tonight to celebrate. My treat."
The message was sent, but for a long time, there was no reply.
Normally, she would have let it go, understanding that Damien Vaughn was busy with work.
But today, Claire Clark was desperate to figure out the relationship between those two children and Damien Vaughn. She absolutely had to see him as soon as possible.
