My Don’s Deadly Choice novel Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Screams from the basement cut through the night.

I walked down the stone steps, each one heavy as a tombstone.

Bianca was chained in the center of the interrogation room. Her dress was torn, her face a mask of terror

“Massimo!” she cried, her voice trembling “Please, let me go! I didn’t do anything”

I stopped in front of her, my eyes as cold as the grave

“Didn’t do anything?” I said slowly. “Bianca, I just heard a very interesting recording”

Her face went white.

“That… that’s a fake! Arabella faked it!”

I pulled a knife from my jacket. A Falcone family heirloom.

“Bianca, I’m giving you one more chance.” The tip of the blade pressed against her chin. “Tell me how my

son died.”

“I don’t know!” she shook her head wildly. “The baby was a stillborn! The doctor can prove it!”

“The doctor?” I gave a cold little smile. ” Dr. Valenti? Funny thing. He had a little… accident last night. Brake failure. Tragic.”

A flash of pure fear crossed Bianca’s eyes.

“So now,” I said softly, “there’s no one left to back up your story.”

The blade traced a thin red line down her cheek.

“Talk.”

“I… I really don’t know…” she sobbed. “Massimo, we grew up together, how can you do this to me?”

My hand tighte…J. The tip of the knife bit into her shoulder.

“Aaargh!” she shrieked.

“Still not talking?” I pulled the dagger out, blood dripping from the blade. “Alex, bring me the old tools.”

Alex nodded and returned with an ancient wooden chest.

Inside was a collection of medieval instruments, each one stained with old blood.

“These pliers, for fing ails,” I said, picking up a rusted tool. “This one… bleeds a person out, nice and

slow.”

“And this…” I held up a barbed iron rod. “It tears you apart from the inside.”

Bianca was shaking uncontrollably.

“Pick one,” I said flatly. “Or tell me the truth”

“I…I..” her voice was a choked whisper

I lost my patience. 1 clamped the pliers on her little finger.

“NO!” she screamed “I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”

I paused, waiting

“The baby… he was bom alive,” she sobbed. “But… but I paid a nurse. While the hospital was in chaos… she cut the oxygen to the incubator.”

“Why?” my voice was a raw rasp. “He was an innocent child!”

“Because I needed my son to be the only heir!” she screamed hysterically. “I did it for you! For us! She and her baby were in the way!”

“What else?” I gripped the knife tighter. “The ambush?”

Her eyes darted away.

I pressed the flat of the blade against her eyeball.

“Talk.”

“It… it was me,” she finally broke. “I leaked the route. I knew the Moretti family wanted a piece of you, so I gave them your security plan for that night.”

“I thought they’d just grab Arabella, I never thought they’d start shooting…”

My world imploded.

I remembered the ight, the sound of gunfire, and my body instinctively shielding Arabella.

In that moment, my body remembered its duty to protect her.

But my mind, my heart… they were already poisoned by this woman.

I protected her killer. I abandoned my wife. I abandoned our child. And in the end, I abandoned myself.

“Massimo…” Bianca whimpered, seeing the look on my face. “I only did it because I love you…”

“Love?” I laughed, a dea empty sound. “You call this love?”

I grabbed her hair, forcing her to look at me.

“You know what, Bianca? You didn’t just destroy my son. You destroyed the only woman I ever truly

loved.”

“Arabella was an angel. And for you, a demon, I hurt her.”

“I will never forgive you And I’ll never forgive myself.”

I let her go and turned to leave

“Massimo!” she screamed behind me. “You can’t leave me! You loved me once!”

1 stopped at the door, without turning back. “Alex. Handle her. The old way.

“And the child. Send him to an orphanage. Far away. I never want to see his face.”
