Elena’s POV
Damien dropped to his knees in front of me, his strong arms wrapping around my trembling body. The weight of leaving this place pressed down on both of us. He understood the pain that was tearing through my chest.
His hands came up to frame my face, forcing me to meet his intense gaze.
"Trust me. She’ll know where to find us." His voice was steady, but I could see the uncertainty flickering in his dark eyes.
Those words shattered the last of my control. The tears I had been holding back for so long finally broke free. They poured down my cheeks like a dam had burst, carrying with them all the guilt and anguish I had been drowning in.
Damien pulled me against his chest without hesitation. He didn’t care that I was sobbing like a broken child. His hand moved in slow circles across my back, grounding me when everything else felt like it was spinning out of control.
"I should have been there." The words came out between ragged breaths.
"What do you mean?" His voice was gentle but confused.
"Instead of wasting time trying to help those vampires and your ex mate. I should have been home with my children." My voice cracked on the last word. The shame was eating me alive.
Damien pulled back, his hands still holding my face. His expression shifted to something fierce and protective.
"Have you been carrying this guilt all this time? Blaming yourself for helping Julian?" The disbelief in his voice made my chest tighten.
I nodded, unable to speak past the lump in my throat.
He shook his head firmly and pulled me closer again. "This is not your fault. They planned this. They wanted you away from the house. It was all orchestrated to separate you from Briar. You have to believe me."
But I couldn’t stop shaking my head. The guilt was too heavy, too real.
"What are they doing to her right now?" The question tore from my throat like a physical wound.
Damien’s silence was answer enough. He didn’t know either.
He guided me to the bed, his movements careful and tender. When I lay down, he settled beside me, wrapping his arms around me like a shield against the world. His grip was tight, as if he was afraid I might disappear too.
Sleep came eventually, but only through complete exhaustion. Even in my dreams, Damien held me close, his presence the only thing keeping me anchored.
